what's in the QT?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
clm08k clm08k were both poly's purchased from the same lfs? Maybe the contamination is in THEIR tanks. If so get the danios from another store just to rule anything out. Infact i would even get a cheap sen or something from another lfs if the danios survive

They polys were purchased from same LFS! Good point and you are probably right.

This is a Different store than the cool saltwater LFS store. The cool one lets me order(where I got the teug from) and where the owner is awesome. Will get the danios from petsmart Or will order some from the cool LFS.

they got them dirty polys there :p
thanks man, really appreciate it!

Going to read some threads on cycling. I'm excited about the danios. If only I were that excited about my homework.

^^^^^ so agree! ^^^^^

And you've done a lot for these fish and it's very apparent you care for them and want to do the best by them.
You are so sweet. Thank you! I also appreciate everyone being so patient as I ask questions about everything. It's evident you guys are caring people too! and also it's polys, so how could I not :D

clm08k clm08k figure this would be good for you to hear.
So i think i may know why my polys are still washed out. Smh stupid mistake one my part and something that ive always taken into account when setting up knew tanks. Guess i was in such a rush i over looked the basics.

So when we add bio media to our filters all we are really adding is surface area for the bb to grow on. Those bb colonies grow as large or as small as they are needed to convert ammonia/nitrite to nitrates (fed) the more food/waste the larger the colony is.

In my 150 i would feed every 3 or 4 days so the colony was as large as needed to convert the waste it being "fed". Now i moved all the bio media from the old sump to the new one and added 20L of new media. It takes time for the bb to establish on new media. I immediately started feeding everyday and overfeeding ontop of it because i wanted to see how much i could throw at the system to see what it could handle. Like how fast the socks would clog up or how fast nitrates would creep up, but like an idiot i didnt take into account my bb colony wasnt used to this type of bioload so it wasnt large enough to handle it. Ive only been testing for nitrates. My polys would always look a little crappy when i skipped waterchanges and nitrates creeped to 40ppm. I tested for ammonia tonight and was shocked to have 2 or 3 ppm.... when its that dark green the numbers didn matter to me.

Anyway thought you woukd find that interesting.

Btw i did a fin level wc and dosed safe start for 400 gallons (included the sump volume)

Normally when you move and existing set up to a new larger one you dont change anything too fast feed the same blah blah blah and slowly increase the bioload (adding new fish or increasing feedings). That way the bb colony has time to grow/catch up to whats being thrown at it.

Hahah i picture eddie murphy saying "dey got dem damn dirty poly ova dere" lol

Giant danios are near bullet proof. When i first got back into the hobby i used them to cycle my new filters and thise fish didnt miss a beat even spawned in high levels of ammonia and nitrites. I think they would get sick in clean water lol

I had an ammonia issue with the new tank. Ammonia was at almost 4ppm. I added a ton of new unseeded bio media and was over feeding (stupid i know)

Did a wc and added safestart. 4 or 5 days later ammonia looks to be near 0 ppm. Granted there was established media. Ive also used the product in the past with no established media (starting from scratch) and it worked fine.

1st pic was after the initial water change and dosing with safe start. I didnt think to take a pic of the initial test that showed almost 4 ppm. Last pic is as of last night
