My first true monster

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo

I have a male Rtm in a 150 gallon ....I have only kept him thus far with a female Rtm and a pleco....just with the pleco at this time as I have separated them due to them fighting excessively..I think the advice given so far is correct.,...typically you see people keeping Rtm as pairs in tanks in the size range of mine....however apparently in tanks larger( in that 200 plus range) I would think it MAY be possible to establish a setting with other aggressive or large cichlids, that the rtm might not challenge and with enough to disperse aggression..... seem like I run across you tube videos with people that have large tanks with a bunch of cichlids and an Rtm mixed in there(video not mine)......for sure it would take trail and error and money and probably some fatalities to achieve .....
Trouble is with alot of these youtube clips is that there just a snap shot in time, people see them and then Base there stocking off them and forget that the clip only shows the tank working well for the duration of the video.

Mine is basically the opposite. After redecorating the tank, he's left the otherror fish alone, and he only eats when I'm not around the tank.
Adult ca cichlids are massive babies when it comes to them being rehomed, ime it takes at least 3 months for them to settle in.
Hope all goes well for you.

My 5" chalceus spent a day in a 15 gal tank after I sold him with a bunch of 1" tetras and even a baby convict and he didn't touch one of them, If he was settled in there would have been a bodycount. This fish was very stressed in there but is now in a bigger tank, this same chalceus killed a 2" African butterfly fish.

I think you have a time bomb there, motas take no prisoners

op's opening post stated that he had a spare tank if need be lol

Angelphish Angelphish I went through something similar with some Viejas. I was told the same thing by other members who ACTUALLY kept the speies and they were right I still tried it anyway btw You seem aware of the potential for things to go wrong and have a contingency in place if they do.

He later stated his dad won't allow setup of said tank...

Build a proper divider fast is my advice.

I haven't kept one, but they are certainly not known for love and cuddles

As cich78 cich78 stated in large set ups RTMs may play nice enough with others they can co-exist which is why I think Angelphish Angelphish needs to keep this thread updated because it could validate that. OR if it suddenly turns for the worse (hope not), but is quite possible, it further validates the RTM's reputation. My RTM is maybe 7" at most and gets bolder by the day. My GT is nearly 12" and a bruiser but he gets punked by the RTM now.

Right they arent known for that. Yet you keep stating that its a time bomb. Dont mean to come at you so dont take it that way but how would you know this if you havent kept such fish. Your basing this off of a convict kept in a 15 gal

Would an oscar be better suited for op's tank?

Yes def agree this thread should continue to be updated but for me even if it does play nice that doesnt mean others will get the same result.

Its almost amusing how many times op is told hat it wont work... whats the point. One two or three members stating it shoud be enough. Lol

I know someone who had a polleni turn around and completely slaughter a load of other fish larger than itself. In a similar if not bigger tank. I know my experience is limited though
