tank almost crashed.. please advices!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I checked the water parameters again just now..

ph 6.7 (as expected to go up)
ammonia 2ppm... this is not good.. am I experiencing a mini cycle?
nitrite 0ppm
nitrate 80ppm

I just dose sachem prime for the total tank volume again (2x dose after wc + 1 dose just now, total 3 doses)...
I hope they are gonna make it thru the night... it is pass midnight already here.. damn it.

i did my weekly 50% wc
Hello; There have been a few posts over the years of poor reactions after a large WC. Perhaps until the issue is understood reduce the WC to 20%-25% two or three times per week. This may reduce whatever "shock" is taking place.

the water parameter, i got ph 5.5

tap water parameter
0.25ppm ammonia
0 nitrite
40 nitrate
ph 7.2 (stabled ph after 12-24hours, right out from tap is 6.2).
Hello; It is my understanding most fish can do alright over a fairly wide pH range if it remains steady. Sudden pH changes such as during large WC or other ways of sudden pH change being hard on the fish.

where you are located you might have gotten "bad" water
comes from the well tho
Hello; A check of the well water might be a way to go. Is there a way to get the well tested?

I'm using tiles as substrate,
Hello; Are you the fellow who is using a five day on light schedule to "Tan" the fish? I think there is also the practice of daily cleaning the white tiles. I also think I read a post from you about large increases of bio media and making PVC containers today. Correct me if these are wrong.

I mention these things as they are practices not usual to my experience. Could there be other tank operation practices some of us are not familiar with?

the "tanning", yes that was me. but I stopped it already coz I couldn't bear the algae. the PVC thing is not me tho.

I will monitor closely my water parameter the next couple days..

I will do the followings..
- fast the fish until Saturday.
- will do 25% WC on Sunday.
- feed the fish on Monday.
- test the ph/ammonia/nitrite/nitrate everyday

anything else I should do?

tested the well water, nothing different as far as I'm concerned

Hello; Let me be more clear. By testing the well I was thinking of some sort of professional or government water testing facility.
I follow that you are doing your own testing. If you are new to testing there can be procedure mistakes which give false readings. My experience suggests the use of a standard for the pH meter and the other water parameters. Do you have distilled water available? If I am thinking correctly distilled water should have a nearly neutral pH and should test at or near zero for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.
Distilled water is also useful in rinsing out the tubes used during water testing. Perhaps three rinses of the tubes between each test.

Back to my suggestion of 20%-25% WC. This may reduce the shock of the differences between the tank water and the new well water but is not necessarily a solution.

A possibly faulty assumption is the well water is more likely to be stable over time. Using this possibly faulty assumption and also assuming you water testing is accurate, it would follow there is something going on to alter the tank water pH so much in a week.

A last thought. People are known to poison tanks. I have had it happen to my own tanks. Know of other folks having the problem. Some posts on this forum.

Another issue is the tank equipment can become contaminated. I have buckets used only for my tanks and different buckets for other chores. I mark each type so I don't mix them up. Is it possible other people have access to your tank equipment (not just buckets).

Ph back to 5.6
Ammonia drop to 1ppm
Nitrite rise to 0.1-0.25 ppm
Nitrate 100ppm

Have not fed my folks for 2 days now

Is it possible because of very dirty filter?
Im using canisters and last time i cleaned it was like 1 month ago. I doubt it is the caused but maybe you guys have different opinions?

Fishes are still alive, no gulping air at the surface. All still swimming good.

Happy to hear fish are doing good I personally would just leave filters be until ammonia and nitrite stabilize. I would not touch the bio media if you do decide to do maintenance on the canisters.

I still can not figure out what caused my ph to become so low tho..

Ammonia is getting a kittle better
Nitrite reads 0.1 however

It seems the BB crashed.. the nitrite no longer reads 0.

Yes looks like your aquarium is going through a mini cycle.
