Aerial View Water Change

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think the sand bed would have to be pretty deep to support anerobic bb

I killed a tank worth of fish with a 20% water change in a deep-bed sand tank.... sand was 3-4" deep... no other ill effects from the same water in 4 other tanks that got WC's at the same time.

I do big water changes in our fish room... 40-80% every 1-3 weeks... basically as often/much as I need to in order to keep up with Bichir Girl's (over:eek:) feeding

Wow thats sucks, i only keep a couple of inches of sand so 4 inches seems deep.

Bought a bag of sand... only wanted one tank with sand... didn't have room for 1/2 a bag of sand lying around and didn't want to throw it out, so into the tank it went.

On the third WC (about 45 days after setup) I vac'd the sand to the bottom in a couple of spots, filled the tank back up, and made a sandwich. In the time it took to eat the sandwich the tank crashed, all fish dead. I thought I'd be OK because the fish were diggers... nope.

At one point i was thinking of setting up a deep sand bed in the sump but heard similar stories. Come to think of it there are spots on my tanl where the sand is easily 3 inches due to the polys stirring it and it being a heavier sand. Not liking this

Good aerial footage! I agree on the large volume WC. I started doing 75% weekly WC several years ago and swear by it.
At one point there was a thread that showed the effectiveness of weekly large volume WC vs multiple smaller volume WC. The less frequent large volume was far more effective at reducing nitrates.

As long as the sand is stirred up atleast once a week then no need to worry. Most polys will dig up or stir up so not much to worry. Some fish keepers believe and some don't. But it's plausible in a 2.5 inch sand bed.
