Water Quality

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So then all is normal with me not seeong results ?

Thinking id under 30 is desired then id i dropped to twenty it would fine ? Estimate that the tank and sump are 400 gal (actually less) if i drop to 20 gph then it should cycle the system every 20 hrs. Whatcha think
It can take 1-2 months from replies from seachem themselves but like @Angelohish said.

Gotta look into more about keeping it under 30.

Just wanted to add. Kmuda noticed tjat eventually the media became clogged regardless of mechanical filtration and needed to be replaced. I wanna say it took 6months not sure. Imo even if i have tonspend 40 to 50 bucks twice a year its worth it.

Just sent them an email regarding the 20gph threshold, will post the response.

The water flows into the filter at a flow rate below 50gph, ideally 30-40gph. It hits the foam first which removes anything in the water that wasn't already filtered out. The foam is needed as the pumice the bacteria grows on can clog quite easily. After passing through the foam, the water goes through the pumice, where the anaerobic bacteria converts the nitrate to nitrogen gas. Once the water returns the aquarium, the nitrogen gasses put, leaving the water nitrate free.

The bacteria takes between 1-4 weeks to colonize. Prodibio Biodigest is a form of bottled anaerobic bacteria that can considerably speed up the process.

You gwt yours going yet ? Went with pumice from amazon ?

I've run a carbon biopellet filter for about 2 to 3 weeks now and noticed a steady decline in nitrates and steady decline in pellets etc ..when I dose biodigest the nitrates fell more quickly soon after and carbon pellet volume reduced

Using the protein skimmer to remove the sludge or bi-product from the bio pellets ?

How often do you intend to dose the bio digest ?

Can you post pics of how your running your bio pellet filter. Different principle/media from the denitrate filter.

He uses a protein skimmer in combination with aquarium salt. The Biodigest is double dosed on the first day, then dosed once every two weeks.

Will do .. maybe tomorrow .. recovering from Easter dun lunch ... going to dose once every 15 days .. turning off skimmer when I do

The biopellets eventually become depleted right ? If so why dose with bb ?
