Water Quality

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is brilliant! I need to build something similar but without a sump.

Sump isnt needed. You can place the pump amd retuen directly in the tank. kno4te kno4te set his up like this (i think)

I don't have a sump. Was planning to but the wife has fish blocked a lot of that. Planning to get a bother big tank too or diy plywood tank but that's also been put on hold.

Looks a bit sloppy Cohazard Cohazard .

I just straight in and out of the tank.

Pump is in the top corner.

The outlet is just straight into the tank.

How long did it take you to notice reduction ? I ran mine for a week but was over 50gph. Lowered it on friday. Not seeing any results. I know it takes a while for the bb to colonize but thought the suspected doping by seachem would have shown something...thoughts ?

It wasn't like 3 weeks in that some changes were noted.

By the way I did send an email to seachem and keeping flow below 30gph and optimal dentrification so will see.

I came up with the idea and design.

Not mine.

I copied it from another member (kmuda) who's filter was 9ft tall but said making a smaller series of towers would be the same.

So then all is normal with me not seeong results ?

Thinking id under 30 is desired then id i dropped to twenty it would fine ? Estimate that the tank and sump are 400 gal (actually less) if i drop to 20 gph then it should cycle the system every 20 hrs. Whatcha think

The water flows into the filter at a flow rate below 50gph, ideally 30-40gph. It hits the foam first which removes anything in the water that wasn't already filtered out. The foam is needed as the pumice the bacteria grows on can clog quite easily. After passing through the foam, the water goes through the pumice, where the anaerobic bacteria converts the nitrate to nitrogen gas. Once the water returns the aquarium, the nitrogen gasses put, leaving the water nitrate free.

The bacteria takes between 1-4 weeks to colonize. Prodibio Biodigest is a form of bottled anaerobic bacteria that can considerably speed up the process.

Tomt37 Tomt37 Noticed a boost in the anaerobic bacteria colony in his nitrate reactor when he dosed Biodigest.
