What puffer is this?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I love the schoutedeni's yellow tail, too. They don't always fan them, but when they do, that lemon color immediately draws your eye.

Mine have been very easy to keep. I wish they got a "little" bigger because I think they are so beautiful, and would love to see one hunting around in a big tank, but it is also nice to have an interactive freshwater puffer that does well in smaller tank environments, too.

I think you'll enjoy one.

Yea I think a 75 gallon is going to be like a mansion for this guy, especially for just one. I was planning on getting him on a nice healthy diet in hopes of getting him as big as possible, so he doesn't get lost in the 75. Lots of high quality protein rich foods with an unlimited supply of snails haha

Please share any more pics of your puffers that you might snap! I'm probably a good month away from pulling the trigger on one. Gotta tear down the existing tank, scape and plant the new setup and give it a few weeks to balance out before putting a $200 fish in.

I'm just using my cell phone, too - we welcome all fish pics here!

I wish there was better info on sexing these fish.

S Sean W. - are you thinking of trying other fish with the puffer? I think a large school of cories like the C121s or Duplicareus would be cool. Then maybe a really big group of smaller tetras or a smaller group of larger bodied tetras....

I have a few more pics of mine to share and a couple of videos back when he was in the 65.

Hunting down a blackworm, and helicoptering around looking for more food afterwards.

The one thing to keep in mind is that these aren't always easy to find. You could get your tank all switched over and a month from now, not be able to locate one.

Agreed. Do you have a QT you can use in the meantime so you can get the fish now and then transition once your 75 is ready?

Mine is totally fine in the 10 gallon at the moment.

Well I reached out to Wes at 'Rare Fish' here on the forums, it turns out that not only is he just 30 minutes away, he is also getting a "few pairs" in today and sells them at the lowest price out of all the sources that I have found. Really is kind of a win, win, win. Wes said get em' while they're hot cause hes not sure when he will get more. So hopefully I will be picking one up on Monday.

The 75 is no where near being ready, but luckily I have a 20 long in my office thats been setup for a couple months that I should be able to keep him in while the 75 is getting ready. This will also give me a chance to de worm him in the 20 while the 75 is getting setup.

My only issue is I have a hard time with Nitrates, in both my tank the test tube is ALWAYS blood red. This was never an issue with planted tanks, plants like Nitrates and it was actually kind of a good thing. Now I need to learn how to get a handle on this.

Here is a picture of the test, Left is from the tank, Right is from the tap. I just did a 70% WC and will test it again later
