Jack Dempsey coloration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here's a picture of my JD from 3 months ago. At the time of the picture, I've had him for 4 months. His color has changed ALOT and he's in a relatively bright tank. When the lights are off he's basically black. With the lights on he's gray with black vertical bars.
I regard to the bright blue coloration, the older he gets, the further back the blue goes.
I was kind of surprised when I saw this picture because my JD looks so different now! I'm excited to see what he looks like when he is matured.
I feed the tank Hikari Gold Pellets, Carnivore Pellets, Omega One Flakes, and sometimes other things like lettuce or algae wafers.

WOW! The first 2 look like hybrids, at least the 2nd one. It has the facial structure of a Geo.
I get what your saying. After looking closer I notice the tails are a bit different. The 2 dark ones seem longer and narrower and the light one is shorter and wider.

Looks female but it does look pretty small and harder to tell with the colors so washed out.

From my limited experience I have observed JDs change colour an awful lot. Either from changes in their environment or even just through developing with age.

A dark substrate, dark background, being boss of the tank and good quality food will bring out the best.

Hi i know this is not about jack Dempseys but im wondering if i can add two kissing fish with my 5 inch senegal bichir

I dont buy the dark substrate being needed to make JD’s darken up. My JD tank has pool filter sand in it and my JD is dark. I think the most important things are dominance and not being stressed with good water and diets.
