So today I went out to purchase some Mollies or Swordtails as duanes duanes , @dan518 etc suggested. So I go to my LFS and let them talk me into purchasing a chocolate Cichlid instead as they kept saying they aren't comfortable selling me Mollies etc with a JD. So I got the chocolate...

I think I have made a big mistake. The minute I put the choc in the tank my JD went almost black, whilst the colour has come back to normal the JD won't leave the other alone, chasing it around the tank and trying to bite it. I tried rearranging the tank but it's made it worse.

What should I do? Leave them for 24hrs to settle down?, or should I separate them? I'm in the process of setting up the tote if I need to separate them until I can return the choc if that's your guy's advice.

Great trying to catch the chocolate to put it in the tote and it's disappeared lol

Got the chocolate into a tote. I'm angry at myself and the lfs. The poor chocolate would be so stressed at this point and it doesn't seem to worry most lfs. I doubt it will ever really recover. From being put into a plastic bag, then added to a new environment only to then be bullied, then netted out of the tank and into another new environment to being again added to a bag, transported and returned to a tank full of fish. I would have rather thrown the money away than do this to a living creature.

Must hand it to my jd. After all the going on in his tank, 2 minutes after removing the chocolate and redoing all his caves, his begging for food. This jd has zero fear and gives zero.....

In the future you might also want to consider placing fish from your LFS into a quarantine tank for a few weeks of observation, before plopping them in with your jag. A mistake like that could be the last mistake for your jag. Something else I'm sure that your LFS forgot to mention.

It's not a jag...I'm not that crazy ;). I've only had the Jack Dempsey for 3 days and it is sort of a qt tank. But with this jd craziness I think he would even try it on with a full grown jag or dovii lol

LOL, sorry meant to type JD. No coffee yet. :)

Either way, QT is always the way to go, unless all of the fish at your LFS are in the same tank, or on the same central filtration system.

Yeah I do always qt but they are from the same shop and the shop runs a central filtration system. I was actually hoping for a laid back JD, but like my poor departed Oscar I think I have a crazy one lol

You might want to consider sourcing your mollies from local breeders. Central filtration is typically a ticking time bomb. Good luck.
