Silly me...Listening to LFS instead of you guys

You might want to consider sourcing your mollies from local breeders. Central filtration is typically a ticking time bomb. Good luck.

I know but not much choice in Australia :-(

Yeah 90% of LFS workers have only a very basic understanding of anything. I wouldn't even ask them for advice. Just make sure the swordtails or mollies ( I prefer swords, mollies seem to like a lot of salt in the water) are big enough to avoid being a snack. And don't feel too bad about the chocolate, he will recover fine. Before ending up in the LFS tank he probably endured a 3-5 day shipping period in a bag of water in a Styrofoam container, and was probably dropped/tossed around a bit.

Yeah that's what made me angry at myself, I have been burnt before and still haven't learned my lesson. Swordtails it is than. I just fill bad for helpless creatures

Don't beat yourself up man, you're doing the right thing now. Just don't let those swindlers at the LFS BS you again

To me the LFSs suggestion of adding another cichlid is asinine.
And I agree with RD, even if the fish are from the same LFS, most stores get new shipments every day, and the chance of bringing some pathogen or parasite into your tank, is not worth the aggravation, and expense of treating, compared to quarantining..
In my experience, LFSs hardly ever know what the are talking about, and have the most disease prone fish (because of the constant shipments), and only notice a problem when its at epidemic proportions.
And again, as RD said, a local breeder or someone from a local fish club, is an excellent suggestion.
And to those LFSs that do give a sh't, I don't mean you, there are sometimes a few good ones, though few and far between.

Whilst I agree 600% I'm in Australia where shops get shipments not very often because there isn't a huge turn over in stock compared to overseas and local breeders are almost non existent. I recently joined a local fish club, which is supposed to be one of the bigger ones in the country and that had a grand total of 40 people. Australia has such a small population spread over a very large land mass.

As for qt, again totally agree but the tank the JD is in is sort of a QT tank. I only got him a couple of days ago and haven't dewormed etc yet. Trust me I have a billion 5g buckets, nets etc each tank has it's own. Also, in Australia it's almost impossible to get proper meds like you guys can get. So unfortunately, if a fish gets sick there isn't a lot that can be done unless you are willing to spend a fortune on a specialized vet to visit said fish.

How big is your Jack Dempsey? If he is above 4'' it will be very tough to add other cichlids with him unless they have a superior aggression level to him. For example a Jaguar, Dovii, or Red Devil you would not have to worry about for long, they would turn the tables.
In my experience I've had luck raising peaceful more docile cichlids like uaru, chocolates, and severums with Jack dempseys when the both of them are small juveniles. In the future if you would like to have a jack and a chocolate, might be something you want to consider.
Are you familiar with Majestic Aquariums in AU? I am a big fan of his youtube channel looks like he has a very big fish store and is very knowledgeable.

That's what I was thinking since he still is a baby 2-3" but no I have a crazy jd. I have been to majestic aquariums, a long drive (over an hour plus) and not that impressed tbh.
