How to Rid Aquarium Worms?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How much distance was there from the top of the xpxl to the water line? I forget what the company says it needs to be but that's sometimes a problem for the xpxl because of its height. I've heard of problems because of that.

What did you use on the gasket and o rings if anything? What was your maintenance like???

I've also heard of various problems with other filstars but I'm not convinced the quality is significantly different with API. I hear about problems with just about every brand and the manufacturing for virtually all of them is outsourced. The exception is eheim classic series like the 2217. The eheim classic canisters are also manufactered in china like api and others but I believe the eheim classic series gives fewer problems and is more reliable. They also come with good biomedia ... enough to fill the canister and the 2217s are 129 - $169, so I think the 2217 is the better deal.

A good deal I ran into ...20160712_120206-1024x768.jpg

It definitely isnt the distance of the hoses from the filter because this filter had worked flawlessly for some time, that is until now haha. Im most certain it is the rubberized o rings, but im just gonna buy another filter (the same model) and try to fix this one for the new tank (125 gal) ill be putting up. The filter is 7+ years old with no maintenance other than cleaning out the filter baskets, cleaning out the inside of the pipes, and cleaning out the motor rotor. The o rings have never been replaced!

The filter has never did me wrong until now so I can say its a pretty good filter. Like I said, most canisters cant fit through the tank stand so my options are limited anyways.

I will most definitely post pics of the worms as soon as i do the next gravel vac. They are definitely not earth worms.

Petsmart was discontinuing them so they were on sale. I was looking for something else when I noticed them at that very low price. I decided I'd check everything and open the canisters like I would for maintenance to make sure everything was there and in working order. There were spider webs in the boxes and you could tell they hadn't been looked at in a very long time. I think the average petsmart customer overlooks canisters like Filstar XPL because they're expensive considering their flowrate and media volume compared to other canisters in the store. The price must have reflected how unpopular they actually were.

You can't go wrong getting another filstar xpxl.

You say they're definitely not earthworms. Do they look long and thin in comparison? Have you seen these on your pothos plants?

Here is a pic of 1 of the worms. I would say they are long and thin. I have not seen these on my pothos plant, I just assume they came from it since it is the only thing I have ever really put into my tank except these 2 fish and prepared foods (non live). And these fish have been in here for longer than 3 years now withthis problem only showing up after i added the plant.

So is this a detritus worm?20170804_200926.jpg 20170804_200945.jpg

Sounds like detritus worms. Post a pic and easy way to tell. Usually present from overfeeding. Kee vacuuming as it's the safest way without exposing to meds.

Usually fish will eat them but not sure of your stock.

I posted the pic above, sorry it took so long. Oh and yea I do think my fish eat them, the male was starting to get picky wuth his pellets and was digging more than usual lol. Sneaky ol cichlid

That's one of the larger varieties of detritus worms I've seen in aquarium gravel. If regular gravel vacs with water changes don't eliminate or greatly reduce their size and numbers you might then consider levamisole HCI powder.

Keep the thread updated.

Do you think they can be eradicated with frequent gravel vacs or only reduced in numbers?
