Rays Internal parasites discussion

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tank size 8x2.5x2', 285gal, filtration 2x fx 6 + 1 eheim 2260, total filtration 1680 gph, turnover 6.

You need more.......

I just learned the hard way. A large(r) ray just overwhelmed my system. Under 10 inches they are not hard to filter for........over 14 and it is a new ballgame. (Fwiw my system did not crash or anything but i began seeing trace amounts.......and i was not comfortable leaving her in there. The media was overwhelmed. And it was too much work to constantly be changing water. I tripled the media )

Luckily i have a friend that was able to "ray-sit" my largest one till i get my system settled down.

I shoot for 10x turnover at least. I also learned i need significantly more media than expected.

Sorry for your loss.

Do you have some meds on the way? Could you find em locally?

I have to agree you need alot more media then 2 fx6 can hold. My one filter holds 25l k1(I need more) 10 gallons of bio balls 7kg of bio home and about 25 pieces of bacteria house

Just so we can get an idea how much that supports......how many, and how big are your rays? Water volume for above filtration? Thx!

At the highest bio load it supported a trio of marble pups one full grown male marble.
Tank was a 180 (I know shame on me) with 125 sump about 80g of water on a 50gpd drip
Right now with the 75g sump same bio media and a breeding pair of marbles, 2 4-5 inch pups, 10 inch indo dat, 2 inch native bass

Wow, that is some crazy filtration you all are talking about. I have a 240 (8x2x2) with only 1 fx6 on it. I also have a 60 gpd drip system on it. All the trays are loaded with biomedia. The only sponge filters are the ones around the outside of the trays. Stock is 2 18" retics, 1 9" retic, 2 14" hystrix, 1 14" clown knife, 2 poly senegalus, and 1 5" electric blue acara. I do have a DIY k1 2 liter bottle filter, and a sponge filter rated for 100 gallon tank, but I do not think they help much. Anyway long story short, I keep 0ppm ammonia, 0ppm nitrites, and usually 50 to 80 ppm nitrates. So in reality other than some higher than I would like nitrates, my parameters seems to be fine. I have run this like this for 3 years now without any major incidents. I am going to start growing pothos in the water though to help with the nitrates. It worked great for my discus tank. I had them started in my 240, but got red hooks (which are now gone) and they ate every last bit of my pothos. lol

Sorry about the rant. lol

Now for the actual question, I just went through the exact same problem. I had my male retic get parasites somehow. I treated with Prazi 1 time for 6 days with the drip system off and that seemed to cure my little boy. He is eating like a pig now. I was prepared to inject Prazipro straight into the rays food though so they would ingest it, but I got lucky and did not have to do that. I am not sure where the parasite came from, could be the frozen shrimp or the frozen bloodworms or even the live earthworms I feed. I only buy non wild frozen raw shrimp, but I feel that is still where they came from. We are not cooking it for our rays to make sure everything is dead in the shrimp. Long story short the rays are now fine and eating like little pigs again.

Have you tested you water about 15-30 minutes after feeding to see if you have ammonia spikes? The thing with an under filtered tank is that it will ammonia spikes after feeding due to not having enough bio media. I am not saying that your tank is doing this but I would test this theory if I where you to be on the safe side. Ammonia spikes can add stress which can in turn make any fish more apt to get sick for multiple reasons or just up and die. Im am curious now next time you feed or when you get a chance do a full water test after feesing and post results
