Yes and size of grain. I have sugar fine sand, current plays a big role. Placement is key otherwise it will cause sand stroms.I use pfs, and it looks fine, it's all about current.

The center pile was twice the size before the royals worked it over.

It depends on the wood. The center stuff is all wood that I collected along Lake Ontario, so it's a softer wood than the mopani or Malaysian stuff. It took my 3 royals about 2 years to break it down. I have a bunch of other plecos in there so I'm sure they contributed to it as well.How long did that take?
