What is your favorite CA/SA cichlid and why?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You could be right, always thought my old barred midas was beautiful,
Anyone have photos of the “red side barred midas” Rapps has awhile back? I have an adult female doesn’t appear to show much red at all- atleast not for a red/green colorblind person

First pick has to be Oscars, so much personality, temperament, activity level.
When I was a kid, my mother had a huge tank with a bunch of Oscars in it. I would spend a good part of the day sitting there watching them.
So when I got out of the Army I set up my own Oscar tank. I had 3 of them all the size of dinner plates, and a foot long Blue Eyes pleco. Had this tank running for two and a half years. Then I woke up to a heater failure that cooked them all. Left the hobby for a decade or so.
Now I am back and got me a new Oscar. I have had it for about 6 months now. And she is every bit of Oscarness that I remember. Pouts when I change things around. Happy to see me when I go near the tank and comes to the front to say hi, and beg for food.
My second choice would be Festae. One day I will get a nice big tank so I can get some.

fish i have personal experience with. for a wet pet red devil/midas. for community tank severums, salvinis, jack dempsies.

I like salvinis. My first attempt with them was a bit of a disaster as I didn't know what "moderately aggressive" meant when referring to CA cichlids. I took them back to the shop eventually, they are still there and every time I see them I sort of regret getting rid of them. One day I will set up a tank around them and do it properly. My geos and acaras were glad to see them gone I imagine.

sorry, for some reason I thought it was only about SA.

Why am i not getting notifications for my own post? lol

I am currently considering pretty much everything discus are could be a no go due to my stocking but ive always wanted a few of them.

I'm surprised i haven't seen more post about vieja or paratheraps. That's what im currently leaning towards for stocking or another group of winemilleri. However i really did love my texas cichlids i had years ago.
