Perfect cichlid for 75 gallons

Unless you buy from a true breeder/reputable fish store it is very hard to be able to tell apart when young. There are differences in their face and head.

Another option you may like is the Carpintis, same family as texas cichlid.

As far as fish I like I have already considered Texas cichlids but I am not really into them but the rd and Cuban cichlids are my top choice right now unless someone brings something up I haven’t seen before, how long did it take your rd to not be shy or let you know when it is hungry?

i initially bought mine at around 3" and he lived with some other cichlids until he turned lethal at about 4.5". he was dominant and active during feeding from day 1.

also an incredibly hardy fish. hes had to live in several makeshift homes since hes been so destructive, including buckets, plastic totes, and old sumps i had rigged up for weeks at a time. never really seems to stress about it.

Wow, do you have a pic of him, I was wondering what kind of colors rd can come in I’ve seen a wide variety so far. Also what decor have you put in your tank?

i need some updated pictures. im putting the finishing touches on my dual tank stand now so I'll fet some good ones soon. heres some from a couple months ago. hes solid orange. if you want more varied coloration go with a midas.

I honestly don’t mind the color as much as the personality, personally I like the pure red devil better but your looks very nice, I imagine that he has grown a bit

I mean I like the pure rd better than the pure Midas, but I assume their personalities are practically the sane

a lot of of people say its nearly impossible to find a pure red devil in a lfs because theyve been interbred so much with midas. you'll see the term "midevil" a lot to describe them. i like to think mine is mostly red devil.

yeah hes pushing 9" tl now. though
the raphael has actually grown more i think.

regarding tankmates, i would expect nothing to survive in the 75 with a red devil save for a bad tempered, prickly raphael of decent size. ive tried giant danios with him too but they were all eaten/chased out of the tank.

That’s tough, I might just make a ton of caves for a pleco to try but I feel like no dithers will survive. I assume all petsmart rd are probably mixed but at my LFS there is a rd that is a few inches long and he is orange with a little bit of white. So that might be my pick
