Perfect cichlid for 75 gallons

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Having raised an Oscar in a 55g for 7 months now there is no way I would try to keep it in a 4ft tank for life. She is huge already and has another 5in to go.

My Oscar in a 55g

Now this is the last FTS I have of her in the 55g it's dated 18 Dec. In the 4tf tank she would sorta lollygag back and forth from end to end. As soon as I put her into the 125g she became a new fish. Now she actually swims around with a purpose. Not always swimming on the front glass, but using the whole space.

So if you are set on an Oscar plan for an upgrade and plan for it soon. Oscars gain about an inch a month for the first year.

Her she is now in her 125 and she looks small again right.....not for long tho.20180203_175604.jpg

Now if you are set on the 75g I would go with a smaller cichlid. Like the Blue Acara I mentioned, or convicts, Jeff has some rare marble ones ATM. Firemouths is another choice, they like to school up in a group so that would be cool them all moving around as one. Jewel cichlid is another choice.

If you want to see what it's like for bigger fish cramed into a small tank just look up oscar on youtube, and you can see all kinds of crazy videos of them the size of dinner plates in tiny tank. Imagine living your whole life in a small bedroom.

That’s why I plan to have a medium cichlid like a green Texas or a Cuban so I’m just trying to get the most opinions and info I can about them, also I was wondering about some hardscape aquariums and if anyone could share some photos of there’s, also I plan to have a sump filter and a hang on filter

i vote cuban! couple pieces of igneous rock and some nice bogwood for your scape. dark background and white sand to make his colors pop.

shouldn't need to have the hang on if you're rockin the sump. should streamline your look too.

Yeah everyone has voted cuban so far as what cichlid is best it is rare and has nice color, I assume I have some room for tankmates as long as it is not breeding, idk what to do with fry if I had a pair of acara or Dempsey’s otherwise I would like to have a pair

Pair of large cichlids in a 75? Tankmates too? You're pushing it there

I think of acara's or Dempsey's a 75 would be okay. Cubans it would be tight.
Tankmates with a single Cuban, I would limit to dither fish. There is a chance they would be eaten when the Cuban is an adult, but some species like Buenos aires tetra get large and are fast enough to last, most of the time. Could probably do a bristlenose pleco if you wanted too. Just keep in mind with more fish you will have to do larger or more frequest water changes. I would expect no less than 50% once or twice a week. The more you do, the faster the fish will grow as well.

stick with a single male if you want some tankmates. the breeding behavior will be detrimental for anything else in that 4' span. one big cichlid+group of dithers+one or two interesting bottom feeders always makes a nice 75.

Yeah I mean a single fish with tankmates or just a pair without tankmates, but idk what to do with fry. But just asking Can a red devil live in a 90 gallon tank, without tankmates
