ICH on my Bass

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
use either water softener salt (rated for being used in a potable water situation) or rock salt.
Aquarium salt is BS, NaCl is NaCl.

you should assume they have all been exposed

a white spot disappears, it means the spot has exploded into up to 100 new ick parasites,

raising the temp, the ick spots mature faster, and this warmth hastens the ick life cycle,

it can take weeks

Hello; All of the above. I would add - do not use salt with any other meds at the same time. -Do not combine meds with each other. (some of these meds do a similar thing to salt)

I will also suggest setting up a quarantine tank (QT) for new fish

So how much salt would I have to add exactly or should I just follow the api instructions

So temp right now is at 86 and getting another heater to get it pass 90 along with more powerheads to add air and circulation.

Also I just notice that when my fish sleep they all sleep togther in a corner as well as when they are active they swim up and down the glass.......what does that mean, should I be more concerned??

"Glass surfing" I would not worry about that. As for pilling up in a corner, Pbass young are schooling fish, they feel safer in that corner altogether.
My silver dollers glass surf sometimes . And when I do a water change all my fish except the koi wait for me to leave the tank alone in a corner.
As for how much salt just fallow what others told you to do.. But add it slow like in 24 hours, just dont dump it in add it gradually. As for the temp 86 is the target temp, 1or 2 dagrees will not do much . under 86 will take longer to kill all the ich .
Your stressing out to much. Treating ich takes time its not gone in a few days.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

I can just tell you that I set up my tank at 90-91 degrees and added 1 tsp of API aquarium salt per gallon. I did this for ten days even though the spots were gone after three or four days. It worked extremely well for me.

I feel that the salt and temp are the only way to treet ich safely for Pbass.
It works great. Takes a few weeks. But it works.

Good to hear and ya im stressing out since I paid a good amount for these fish and their like my babies and I want the best for them.

And why is it that salt and temp cant kill ich but not the same for saltwater tanks. I I just thought that temp speeds up the process and dropping the salt down to 1.09. So my thing is, does the salt really help with kill ich or is it that this method is just a way to boost their immunie system and lower their stress in the process?

So following the instructions on 1tsp for 5gallon isnt the right way for this process for kill the ich??

And can anyone verify that 3ppt= 1.0023 specific gravity with a refactomer. Using this site

1 tsp per gallon to treat ich is minimum can go as high as 3 tsp per gallon if fish can tolerate the higher salinity if not then be prepared to do a water change. I would just do 1 tsp per gallon and elevated temp it will do the trick.

From what I understand the treatment (higher salinity) works when the organism is in the mobile stage the higher temp speeds up the life cycle.

Well the api aqurium salt is 65oz->130tbsp->390 tsp.....since my tank is 200gal so thats 200 tsp or 1 tbsp to 3 tsp. So I did the 1tsp to gallon.

So now my question is how much temp can my fish handle atm its at 86-88 thinking about getting another heater to raise it to 90-92........So does higher temp really kill ich quicker??

Hello James; Opinions about this have been stated more than once already in this thread. Let me suggest you pick one of the members and follow their advice or perhaps read thru the thread again. I do not think the answers will change because you have asked the question again.
You can also do a search as there are many threads on the subject of ich.
Good luck
