Does your water temperature drop a lot when you do waterchange? One or two of my ornates used to be like that from the shock when I only added all cold water on a large WC. Most of my bichirs were okay with it but just that one or two was more sensitive.

I always just judge it by feel, I get the water pretty close to what's already in the tank.

I have no clue. But if it was the heater I would suspect that the other fish would be affected too.

I troubleshoot for a living and when all avenues are exhausted I always suspect that something very basic is being missed.

To add to the strangeness my albino sen has been completely fine during both water changes where other polys have been affected. And my knives are completely immune to whatever seems to be happening.

Yeah. That's why I asked you to break down exactly what you do and is it always the exact same. Seems like it's gotta be some small detail. Maybe like Hao said. But if you adjust for temp.....? Does your hot water heater run out of hot water during your fill? Mine kicks on on those big changes. I've got a 50 or 60g and I'm changing out 120+gallons. But still no I'll effect.

Id also be interested in seeing what a salinty test came up with on your tank water. Mostly for my own curiosity. Do you have access to a refractometer? Or maybe lfs does free tests?

I do my 120 first before my other tanks but the water never gets cold by the time I'm on the last one.

120 first then 75, 55 and 30. All around 50%

Yeah I have a refractometer, we have a saltwater tank too.

What was your solution? Smaller water changes? Or hotter water?

I did a water change on my 120 last night, probably around 40%. An hour and half after the water change I found my Lap upside down, I thought she was dead. I poked her with my net and she swam off.

She then began to swim very erratically, banging into the glass, couldn't keep herself upright, just like my polys that died last week.

All other fish and tanks were completely unaffected.

Check ur water parameters. Including ur temps. Seen this after water changes where the fish will jump and injure itself from trauma. Would move the fish to a qt tank with a Low level. Keep the tank covered with clean water.

My dog ripped out his stitches from having been neutered and I spent all afternoon/evening at the veterinarians office... lol. I wasn't able to test my water.

I've got some other experiments in mind too.

My pH used to tank because we had super soft city water (as soft as you can get) and with my plants after a week it would drop significantly. My fish were never affected, maybe because it happened slowly over time, but I'm wondering if you might be getting some pH swings? I ended up having to add crushed coral to my filter which stabilized it.

I'd maybe check tap pH, tap pH after sitting for a day, tank pH after a WC, and tank pH right before a WC. Just a thought.

I did 50-75% WCs every week with zero issues ever.

I would also just check the water temp before a change with a thermometer vs your hand JUST to take that out of the equation. It's free.
