Sexy Plumbing - Island Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Trying to get the design/mock-up for the overflow boxes finished for Wednesday. Settled in on this:

The front to back of the interior box is 1.75”. Low profile and no floor real estate lost.

The interior box will be secured and sealed with three 1.5” bulkheads. Designed it this way to use short bulkheads and not have excess hanging in the box. This helps avoid any noise.

The exterior box will be solvent welded to the tank itself. Designed the interior box 1.5” wider than needed in order to move the outer box bulkheads to the right. Centering the holes in the box as well. This should look much cleaner and more symmetrical from the the front.

When the return arrives Wednesday I’ll know how low the interior box need be drilled/mounted.

Wanted to use a pre-existing hole for the return but the hole is a bit low. It previously had issues with the siphon break so that means the return has to raise about 2” in height in order to raise the siphon level.

Purchased a Siphon Stopper because I like their design. Very creative.. It has to be modified for my needs though.

The original unit.

First modification is to add a split and double the loc line. It lets the flow be pointed down and still have a siphon break.

Since this hole doesn’t fit their template the stock unit will not fit unless it is moved to one side. No way can I handle a crooked return with a hole that is perfectly centered in the tank...........

It’s all separated into like pieces that can be swapped out for different design

Modify = shorten 1" in height, shorten 3/4" bulkhead to nozzle and shorten 3" off of the coupler, split loc line, trimmed new furniture grade elbows to set height, shortened elbows to tuck horizontally, remove a union and bring up the loc line off the floor.

The new elbows are to cut down a 1/2” from both elbows. That will buy the 1” needed

Left is the new modified elbows and right is manufacturer height.

Next the downpipe for the loc line had a coupler to remove. Tested an old adapter to secure it without an NPT adapter as well.

Removing the union means no way to thread in the loc line adapter so here’s a lil hack for you guys. Wrap the threads of the loc line adapter in plumbers tape until it’s hard to thread in. The line is not going anywhere in a slip fitting with that and is water tight/inert.

The remaining parts left over

1/4” from the ceiling is exactly where this should be.

Super happy with how this came out. It’s much more compact and clean :)

The entire return system has been replaced with the exception of the tee/siphon break cap. I really like their design and still do. Nothing against their design at all I just wanted to make it one off/fitted.

Got the interior box done tonight.

1/4” thickness black acrylic and 1.75” front to back. Three internal 1.5” bulkheads.

Matching the hole template from the tank to a new acrylic backing panel lines up the old holes to the new box and centers it.

A bolt on/removable monster overflow in a small package.

Great job on modding the plumbing for the Siphon Stopper and the pics/descriptions/parts in post #83 explains it extremely well.

It looks so much cleaner, pretty and professionally done that you deserve a few hand clapping icons but will have to settle for :D:cool::cool::cool:.

Thank you very much, I appreciate the feedback Dee! :)

Knocked out exterior box tonight as well. This will be solvent welded directly on the back of the tank to make three vessels in total.

Box dims are 15.5”x4”x6” black cell cast, 1/2” thickness. Building a lid for the box as well out of 1/4” black polished/textured.

The overall design is below and super simple. The open side facing the photo goes on tank.

All solvent welded together. Made a mistake during assembly so the bottom needs 2mm tucked up. Easy fix

The lid is polished on one side and the reverse is textured/matte. The four clear squares are to keep it squared up inside.

Clean
