If you want to get scared, read up on prion diseases. In humans, it is called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Also known as mad cow disease, chronic wasting disease in animals. Prions are extremely difficult to destroy.

Prions have all the makings for a nightmare horror story, but strangely, prion talk is hushed up. Laws have very quietly been enacted where hunters cannot bring the brains and spinal cords from their kills into California. Being extremely difficult to destroy, yes patients have been infected in surgery with it. If Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is suspected, surgical instruments are destroyed, and tissue samples are sent to a special lab for confirmation and disposal. Because they are difficult to destroy, prions can survive in the environment to infect new hosts that come along (which is probably how it spreads in the wildlife population).

Getting back on the ebola topic, it has been years since my doctors' offices have asked if I have recently traveled outside the country....
Somebody died of prions in New York earlier, apparently he liked to sup on squirrel brains ....
Do NOT chew on squirrel spinal cords or eat animal brains!

Prion stuff is kept hush hush almost. I watched a tv program with fish and game rangers and they were quietly testing the deer population for prion disease. I think the general population would be scared to death if they knew the potentially infectious stuff out there.

Hello; Only took them a year to declare this Ebola outbreak a global health emergency. It would take too ling to restate all the points I tried to make about this disease in this post but I still feel much the same. Before now the hope was to have an effective vaccine but last I knew such did not work out.
My guess is the medical personel who volunteer to go into the infected areas have been going and coming back on the quiet. I guess so far they have been careful enough. I still would like a QT period for them before coming back but lost that fight a few years ago.

Not heard if any particular steps are being taken with regular people leaving the infected zone.

Medical clinics have stopped asking "Have you traveled outside the country recently?" Guess someone doesn't want the general public to feel threatened. Getting complacent could kill us. That article you cited was an interesting read. ...especially this paragraph

"The man who brought the disease to Goma was a pastor who had preached in seven churches in the epidemic zone, laying hands on the sick. He became ill and was treated by a nurse, but got on a bus to Goma anyway. The bus stopped at three checkpoints meant to halt the spread of the disease by screening passengers for symptoms, but his illness was not detected. He gave a different name at each checkpoint, apparently hoping to avoid being detained, local health authorities said. Sick and feverish by the time he arrived in Goma, he went to a clinic there, where the disease was diagnosed. "

What a jerk. Feeling all powerful..that he could place his hands on sick people. Then when he gets sick he lies repeatedly to get where he wanted to go. Reminds me of Thomas Eric Duncan who was sick and lied his way into our country, infecting that nurse in Texas. I can see potential for an outbreak here with people desperate for medical help and not caring if they infect others.

Hello; Very well stated. Back a few years ago when he (Duncan) brought the disease into the USA many of us had a heated back and forth about it. My side favoring restricted travel and QT was pretty much shouted down. The powers that be did not want to inconvenience the medical folks in their coming and going. They did not want to affect commercial travel I guess.
Most likely well over 90% of the folks in the infected zone will not be able to travel far and this may be why it has not spread very wide. But you get some person with a passport and money for a plane ticket who starts feeling sick and they may well move out.

I think back when Duncan brought the disease into the USA there were some medical workers who were potentially exposed. So as I recall one potentially infected woman slipped out of QT and went for a snack one night.
