What I’m trying to acheive is showing you that sometimes when a person has a goal that is unobtainable or 99% certain to fail it’s better to tell them it’s not going to happen than to lead them on. The people that are told that they can’t do it and continue are the ones that the world needs because they are the ones likely to change the world.

The exmple doesnt apply though. No i would not tell my kid he can be 6ft tall if hes already fully grown. Yes i would tell my kid he could become a basketball player at any height, its on him to put the work in.

You cant use physical traits. Those are not interchangeable

I would absolutely love to continue this conversation with you and carp but I have to get dressed now so this is the end of my replies.

But what about physical traits that would prevent them from becoming a basketball player in the first place? Like the example of full body paralysis that I mentioned. Would you still tell them that they could be a pro basketball player? My point is that there are factors that exist that make it truly impossible for people to accomplish things, and telling them that they can still accomplish those things despite the fact that they can't accomplishes nothing.

Your complaint or comment was in regards to IQ or intelligence.

How would you feel if you were told you dont have the social skills to become a theoretical physicist for some reason ? Would that stop you ?

My initial example was, yes.

LOL, I never said I wanted to be a theoretical physicist, but social skills are arguably something that can be learned.

In your example, you stated something that could be an obstacle, something that could make it more difficult, but it isn't something that would make it fundamentally impossible, or extremely unlikely.

Ok what ever career you are seeking. If i told you that you cannot follow this career path because you do not have the social skills. Would this deter you ?

fundamentally impossible is different to extremely unlikely, becoming a professional football player or rock star are extremely unlikely, yet a fraction of a % manage to do it. Deciding to jump on the moon is impossible. Encouraging your kids to push themselves to be the best version of themselves and with hard work and dedication they can improve the odds is different to telling them they can do the impossible. This topic is always a tightrope between encouraging, building confidence while keeping a sence of realisem.

Not necessarily, like I said social skills can be learned, but if I wasn't intelligent enough, that would deter me, because intelligence can't be learned.
