Sports, gym and fitness thread 2019

I made a lifestyle change about 8 years ago. When I turned 40 I was 399lbs, at 6'4" I can carry more weight than most on my frame but 400lbs was just crazy. So I made a decision to get back in shape and I lost about 180lbs and got down to 220lb which is good for my height. So goal for this spring/summer is just to drop the 10 or so lbs I put on over the winter and then try to work a bit more light weight lifting into my week just to tone up some. At 47yrs old I won't be working out daily or anything like that, but I plan to work in some curls and simple stuff into my schedule maybe 3 times per week.
Going good! Well done! Some simple home exercises like pushups and all could also help? :)

Definitely eating better and getting more fit this year. For fitness I'm riding bikes. I really got stoked on mountain bike riding, but that has to be more of a weekend thing, when I can actually get to a mountain. During the week I try to ride to work a few times, and still go on an evening ride. I want to work in some upper body and core training also.
Cycling is great, and using it for your commute is a grand plan honestly. What do you want to do for core/upper body?

And ya, all y'all old geezers complaining. Never too late to start! Despite all the wear and tear you could still make something work!

I go for hikes with my dog and that's about it, LOL. I'm 6 feet tall, but I only weigh about 120 lbs.
That's tiny, gotta get some weights in! I have a 2 day, 40km hike competition coming up. It's real tough.

I've just joined a gym near our new house. 2 min drive and air conditioned so no excuses. Have been going to gyms on and off for a few years but want to integrate it into my daily life now.
Been doing 1/2 hour of weights and 10mims of cardio 3 times a week.
Sore , tired and hungry most of the time but it's getting better, it's hard getting back into it when in 40s but will be worth it in a few years time.

After months of problems with my knees I finally followed it up and found out in December I have arthritis in both my knees and one of my ankles. Wear and tear from 17 years working in hospitality.

I'm planning on getting back into yoga once my physio approves it, but I don't think I'll be going back to the 9 sessions I was doing a week prior to my knees giving out on me. I'm setting myself a goal of 3 session a week and two 8km walks with the dog and toddler.

Ya sorry about that.

I just pulled out my old book to look back at the glory days. Lol left is what I was working and reps, middle is set, and right weights. At this point I was lifting these weights solo as my typical partner pulled his pec muscle and was off for a few months. So I took some time off eventually and ended up not coming back for 3 years.

Ahh man i do miss it like hell. Nice d lift numbers. I never could get near those. I switched to romanian dlifts lol

Right before i got hurt i was running some protocol called 3-2-1. Its was great. Theres a few books on it but you can probably find most of it on the net now.

Id like to find somewhere to swim maybe.

You should its a really good workout especially when you really get good at the different strokes and target different areas of your body. YMCA's usually have pretty good lap pools

Im running a 10 mile race in March and then my first marathon in June!

Wow that's an impressive lifestyle change indeed! And at around our age just 3 times a week is enough to stay in decent shape, even quick 30-45 min. sessions if they're reasonably intense. I think daily short and light stretching helps a bunch too. Good luck and hope you keep on that good-minded track.

Rotator cuff issues SUCK. My right one has been bad for about 6 years now, past year it's been getting worse and even starts hurting down into my bicep at times. Sometimes I can't even raise it above my head without a ton of pain. I wanted to get it taken care of this winter but with PT taking 8 weeks or more from what I hear, I'm gonna put it off till next winter. Fishing season starts in less than 2 months so I don't want to screw myself on steelhead season :)

Yes, RC problems are no fun at all. There's quite a few different types of RC injuries, it's such a complex combo of ligaments, muscles, tendons and bones so naturally there are different ways to go about healing/fixing them.

But I'll tell you what helped me 2 different times (once left shoulder, another time right, both climbing injuries, didn't properly warm-up) -- acupuncture. Sometimes once will do it (worked on pinched nerve in back before) but if more serious problems best to go once a week for about a month. Don't take this as medical advice, just something to consider before taking more serious measures.
