Why are these being sold????

Frank, if you read carefully, and slow down a bit, my comment regarding Matt Zoodiver was not a contradiction whatsoever. The person just prior to that comment, mentioned someone keeping a pima in a 5,000 gallon tank, I simply pointed out what someone who has actually kept a few of these, suggested as a min tank size.

Carp - please, for the love of god and everything sacred and holy, STFU.

Neil i guess we (as usual) are not on the same page.
Taking out the 1st half of your comment. You stated "But not a ton of people out there that have that kind of set up to house an adult Arapaima"

But on the other thread you stated thousands of hobbyists can house the fish.

Forgive me for being an "idjit"

Thousands? I probably should have said millions, considering the population of the world. My mistake. But percentage wise, that's probably still less than 2% of the overall number of tropical fish hobbyists, world-wide. (give or take)

I mean I know a lot of people in the industry, as well as a lot of hobbyists, and I don't personally know anyone that can properly house an adult pima. Having said that, I don't think they should be banned, just because I don't personally know anyone that owns a 15K gallon pond.

In theory it would work but lfs are on life support in the U.S. some will blame the big box stores but many of us would also argue that its the online sales that really hurt the lfs

Putting up pics of the adult sizes is agood idea. The petco and petsmart near me do this with a brief description of the temperament of the fish.

Lots of LFS shutting down here the last few years too unfortunately.
Instead of a description of the size I was thinking an actual LifeSize outline of various species painted on to the wall of the shop, the visual image would really make people stop and think a bit more then "max size 30cms" I know my wife would yell at me if I was thinking of a dovii and she saw their max size.

That’s a good idea. May help people understand what the potential size could be for some of these animals.
Another one I think should be order only Alligator Gar.

We get ya bud. You'll have no more issues from me on this thread

I did a search for those selling Arapaima on the internet. I was amazed at the amount that sell these fish. Most warn that they grow big. Some say 6' some say bigger. I could buy one right now on ebay which by the way says nothing about how large they grow.
Just goes to show, anything for a buck$$.

You make a good point. Allot of the websites i purchase fish from do give some sort of care instructions and adult sizes.

Sorry for quoting your post, nothing personal, just led me thinking back to what I originally thought about this thread....

For example your first link is stating 20+ years life span for the arowana....

Considering the enormous amount of fish keepers that keep or have kept arowanas, and the minuscule amount that have actually managed to keep them alive for 20 years, lets just say that banning certain fish ownership has become necessity.....We humans can barely manage to not kill each other, not to mind fish or other animals.
