Why are these being sold????

They go home without one. I already weighed in on this in a previous post.
While any one of those shops could source me a pima, the cost to order 1 juvie pima on a SA order would have been very cost prohibitive. One can't just walk in a shop & say "order me an Arapaima gigas" Those in the know will know how and where to get them, but it will be costly, and there could be a pre-order wait of weeks or months, and dumb ass kids won't be able to get one on an impulse buy. That is a key point, because we already know from invasive species that we can't stop stupid - but maybe, just maybe, we can slow it down.
Little Johnny and his dad search on the Internet, where pics of full grown paima pop up, which hopefully gives them pause for thought, then they see the extra cost of having one imported. Will it stop them possibly not, will it stop some of the little Johnny's, yes. I would much prefer the hobby to get better at self policing then having government legislation forced on us.

I have seen the destruction up close, first hand. And I have seen a **** ton of tropical "hobbyist" fish that could not be cared for once they matured, dumped into local watersheds. A **** ton of fish. And that was back in the 1960's. How many 100's of thousands more since when I was a kid? Only god knows the answer to that. I don't want to see wide sweeping restrictions, or bans, but some restrictions, and some outright bans, have become a reality. Like it or not, sitting back passively attempting to educate the masses does not work. Even today, with all of the information widely available on the internet and elsewhere, something that didn't exist when I was growing up, we still have members of MFK that openly admit to dumping their aquarium fish into their local watersheds, and wondering what the big fuss is all about. Go figure.

Dan i agree with you 150% i hope that those descriptions would deter someone from purchasing the fish.
But what others want to be an order only fish wont make adent besides maybe a bored impulse purchase.
Dad doesnt care that the fifisfifish gets huge. He thinks meh no big deal i'll just get rid of it at some point. (And please RD this is just an example lets be clear i dont agree with this thought process)

If little johnny had to pay a fee and apply for a permit to order the fish, would his dad want to go through all that trouble just to get one type of fish, when there were plenty of small ones he could go home with that day, without the extra hassle? No way, IMO.
From working in the LFS industry for over 10 years, I can tell you the unfortunate truth is that there are far more irresponsible fish owners than responsible. I get people all the time asking for arowanas for their 55 or 75 gallon tank. I tell them the fish gets much too large, and they say " But I've got a big tank! You can't tell me my tank is small!" I even get people who come in asking for aggressive fish, because they want to watch them kill each other for the enjoyment of it. The people happily admit this, as if it's fine and normal. I won't sell anything to these people. But there are no shortage of them.
Nice side step. We all now how long you've been in the hobby...you never let us forget lol.
Your stance changes like the wind though. Prima can be kept by thousands and millions in one thread. Here well not soo many. They shouldnt be easily sold but you dont want restrictions.....but then we agree that education is key...but then everyone is a moron
So please where does the great rd stand on this topic and whats the resolution to it ?

Obviously one can never stop stupid 100% of the time. But for many people, if they have to jump through enough hoops, they will go meh, it's not worth the effort. For the truly dedicated hobbyist, they will jump through hoops, pay for permits, and sell their first born if necessary - to get the fish of their dreams. That's the difference.
LOL, huh? It's a big world Frank, how many times must I explain that? Maybe go back and re-read everything I have posted in this discussion, in full, and it will eventually sink in. I can't fix reading comprehension skills.

They just want the fish to be order only.
I get what your saying i worked in a pet store when i was a kid. Whether we agree with it or not its a business. Bans and restrictions for the sole purpose of improper care (not invasives) would be a dangerous thing amd im betting not many would agree with it. 1st pima then what comes next.
