If little johnny had to pay a fee and apply for a permit to order the fish, would his dad want to go through all that trouble just to get one type of fish, when there were plenty of small ones he could go home with that day, without the extra hassle? No way, IMO.

From working in the LFS industry for over 10 years, I can tell you the unfortunate truth is that there are far more irresponsible fish owners than responsible. I get people all the time asking for arowanas for their 55 or 75 gallon tank. I tell them the fish gets much too large, and they say " But I've got a big tank! You can't tell me my tank is small!" I even get people who come in asking for aggressive fish, because they want to watch them kill each other for the enjoyment of it. The people happily admit this, as if it's fine and normal. I won't sell anything to these people. But there are no shortage of them.

This is that good intentions thing. What I see is a wide variety of my favorites requiring a permit because of someone else's moral compass.

In the USA, are there currently any fish keeping restrictions, import or otherwise, that were put in place due to cruelty issues?

Just curious, as every last restriction/ban that's become part of Canada's aquatic invasive species regulations, have absolutely nothing to do with cruelty. In fact, with carp, not only must the fish be dead, it must be eviscerated in order to be legally in possession, and/or transported.

I don't see wide sweeping "cruelty" bans being put in place, certainly not in the USA. The rest of that comment would violate the TOS here. lol

J jaws7777 Obviously one can never stop stupid 100% of the time. But for many people, if they have to jump through enough hoops, they will go meh, it's not worth the effort. For the truly dedicated hobbyist, they will jump through hoops, pay for permits, and sell their first born if necessary - to get the fish of their dreams. That's the difference.
So jump throught hoops means restrictions but your not for restrictions lol

LOL, huh? It's a big world Frank, how many times must I explain that? Maybe go back and re-read everything I have posted in this discussion, in full, and it will eventually sink in. I can't fix reading comprehension skills.

No thanks. Its like two different people with the same avatar. Lmao who can comprehend you my comm skills are fine tuned to b.s.

I just wish everyone's moral compass put animal welfare above purchasing convenience

Sorry for the confusion, Frank, I'll try and elaborate for you. What I said was, "I don't want to see wide sweeping restrictions, or bans, but some restrictions, and some outright bans, have become a reality. Like it or not, sitting back passively attempting to educate the masses does not work."

Do you understand what the term wide-sweeping, means? And I was referring to the Govt, imposing wide sweeping bans. As in on everything, small, medium, and/or incredibely large species, due to potential cruelty issues, or size issues, or whatever issues. This is your main concern, yes? I have never seen such a ban put into place, at least not in North America. I also believe that the vast majority reading my comments will understand exactly what I am saying, and exactly what the message is that I am attempting to get across.

Trolling is a violation of tos as well

Please feel free to use the report button if you ever feel that I am violating the TOS. Thanks boss.

As I said before, hardly anyone cares about fish welfare. They only have 5 second memorys, don't feel pain, etc.

Any species of fish, ever?
