Sick Flowerhorn

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think the NaCL was wrong.

I am so surprised and so sorry. I can't believe there is so much conflicting info on this. It may be too late but it sounds like the water should be changed. Was hoping Duanes would weigh in because he is much more experienced than I.

Ok I will change it out! It’s not your fault. This is what I mean. I have been reading for days and I can’t figure it out so dawn tried to help. Even the vet said regular salt but in my head salt will make him swell more. I don’t know what’s right:(

Again, I am so sorry. Have messaged Duanes to see if I am missing something.

I just realized I put the Erythromiacin in and there is no more around here! We had to go to 3 stores about an hour away to get what we have so if I take the water out I will remove all the meds I just put in and not have enough for a fully 4 dose treatment. I think I will cry now.

I see kno4te has also recommended salt in another popeye thread. Have tagged him. All I can say is hang tight.

I am doing my best! I have changed the water yet just due to the fact of the meds and the salt is up in the air. Again thank you for you help and support.

I think the advise was generally good so don't panic folks. Most sick fish don't make it unfortunately.

The salt was not a completely bad move and may not have contributed negatively to the issue. Sadly it is all trial and error trying to treat fish diseases. The only part I'd mention on salt again, that was covered by LBdave, is to increase the dose slowly, not all at once.

The salt is good against bacterial outbreaks and also many parasitic but not all fish can take the dose you need to do in order to kill those. Pop eye is mostly bacterial though, or fluid build up for one or another reason, perhaps the injury was too bad and the salt had nothing to do with it?

Alternatively pop-eye is often due to poor water quality if injury is not involved.

If bacterial, and living in a country where antibiotics are available, that'd be my choice, something that covers mostly gram negative but also some gram positive bacs, so broad spectrum.

My point in using NaCl is to help other infections from spreading, if treatment was going to be tried at all.
If you look in my 1st post, I suggest, if it were me, I probably would not expect it to live, and probably would have euthanized it, barring that way to go, just keeping infection from spreading would be my next objective.
The damage to the eye looked extensive, way back on the 1st page of posts, and looked to me, irreparable. That doesn't mean the fish couldn't make it, but may be blind in that eye, and it (the eye) would never again look healthy.
