Sick Flowerhorn

Hope you can save him!
No question is a dumb question. If you are asking me, the catfish should be ok, but not really a good food for fish. Lots of people use tilapia.
I myself stick to processed pellets, sticks and freeze dried foods.
Did the catfish have a bug in it? Who knows. Did the FH already start getting a disease before crashing around? Who knows. We all know that fish that are stressed are prone to disease.
But you bring up something that I have read about a lot. When "others" take care of your fish, they often die. Best if decide what your fish eat.
I was here he was cooking his own dinner because he didn’t like what we were having and I saw him walking away from the tank and Fred chomping away so I asked and I got upset because I wasn’t sure if catfish was safe then the next morning his head was banged up and that one eye was a little swollen and now we are here today with him in ICU. Usually no one goes into my tanks because they know I am paranoid.

One of the ways I like to add salt, is I use the water softener type, from the hardware store ((in 50lb bags) the are large ovals, and meant to dissolve slowly, so I dump the entire amount in the tank, under the influent flow of a filter, all at once. If the tank has a HOB filter I put some in the tank, and some in the filter.
The osmotic pressure of the salt helps the fish produce slime coast which can help the wounds heal.
BTW, they won't soften the water.

Good. Stay paranoid. It's like someone giving something to your dog (like sugarless candy). It could kill it. Because they don't know what they are doing.
You read the forums, ask questions and read up. So you know what to do. "Others" don't.

I just started adding salt but it’s not kosher. It’s pickling salt the other kind had antibinding stuff in it. I didn’t even think of water softener kind at the hardware store! Damn! I did 1350g but it’s not dissolving great. I pours in some. I am still stirring to try and dissolve it. So pour this in over several hours since I don’t have the kind you are referring to?

I read too much and then I second guess everything I do. So many contradictory things online. I just added some of the salt mixture after a water change. So what am I looking for if I add too much salt?

Yes that is an article I read Sunday night trying to figure out what was going on. I thought good it’s only one eye so the swelling should go down as he heals from the hit but yea that didn’t happen. I think I read for hours and hours about pop eye. This is beyond Popeye now. Gets worse by the hour. Makes me sooooooo sad.

Not sure aquarium salt (regular salt) is the right thing. It appears that epsom salt is needed to reduce pressure on the eye.
Duanes can you confirm?
Omg!!! That’s why I didn’t add salt in the beginning! This is what I mean by reading. It’s so bad.

I think the NaCL was wrong.

I am so surprised and so sorry. I can't believe there is so much conflicting info on this. It may be too late but it sounds like the water should be changed. Was hoping Duanes would weigh in because he is much more experienced than I.
