Sick Flowerhorn

This is what my friend would like to know.
I don’t know. I guess I need to know if I keep treating with Erythromiacin or not. If I treat with aquarium salt or epsom salt at the same time as the meds. I don’t know what I should do. Do I move him to the 20g and start over. Omg! I have no idea!
Hopefully others will advise but what I have heard and read is the salt and gram neg. antibiotics are the typ. treatment.

Because pop eye is a bacterial infection Erythro......is a good choice.
Regular salt NaCl would be better than epsom (epsom (MgSO4) is used to purge the gut).
By the way salt is salt (NaCl), saying Aquarium salt is any better than any other, is a myth (a marketing ploy).

Thank you. I will tell her.

Thanks so much Dave for your help. I appreciate it. Can she put him in a 20 gallon quarantine tank? He is about 12 inches long.
If it was me I would only move to another tank to protect the community tank. If this fish is by itself already I would just continue treatment.
Make sure the amount of salt is maximized (see link I sent).

This is what she asked
Ok. I will get canning salt today and give it a try. I will do a water change tonight and another dose of Erythromiacin and add salt. Can you ask how much per 10g as he is in a 75g? I think it’s a tablespoon per 10g but I have read so much I don’t know what’s right.

I usually use salt at 3 lbs per 100 gallons (easy to covert to other tank sizes),for ick, for injuries, what ever, and I use by weight, because different grades and shapes of salt crystals of salt fit differently into a Tbsp, or tsp.
A lb is a lb no matter what shape.
Just as a reference, sea water is 35 lbs per 100 gallons.

I use deionized table salt
Even though deionized not supposedly required

Just a question, 18grams per 1gallon of salt figures out to 2.98 pounds for 75 gallons. But 3 pounds of salt for 100g equals to 2.25 pounds for 75 gallons. I am confused because it’s different. So you said use max dose of salt so go by 18 grams instead of the 2.25 pounds? Is this added slowly or just dissolve and add in after water change and new dose Erythromiacin?
