It's kind of fun to see stuff you wrote several years ago pop back up to the top. I've been out of the game for a couple years now, any newer good foods on the market or should I stick with NLS?
Just recently got a half dozen of these sweeeeeet red dovii that I am going to grow out lean and mean.
From the various threads I've read here and also just reading the actual ingredient lists, I'd say NLS is at the top. As RD has pointed out, the NLS algaemax has several types of algae whereas Northfin Kelp wafers have kelp as the main ingredient for vegetable/algae matter.
I think Northfin is quality and a close second. There was an ethoxyquin controversy with Northfin a few year back but it seemed to be mainly in the Krill Pro line. The really high test results resulted in North fin revamping their website and food preservative claims. Prior to this revamp they were making nonsensical claims about being preservative free which lab testing proved to be completely wrong.
I personally mix Northfin Kelp wafers with NLS algaemax in my tank bc I got a good deal on the kelp wafers. The fish like it but I like to feed the algaemax as well because of the variety of algae it adds to the diet.
I haven't opened it yet, hut I have Northfin's Bug Pro. My fish liked the Fluval Bug bites but I realized that product had a lot of fillers an dtoo high fat content. The Northfin version has superior ingredients and seems to be the best food to give if you want to add Black soldier fly larvar to your fish diet. I haven't opened mine yet because I have a bunch of food around from taking advantage of clearance sales and just going nuts ordering stuff.
For frozen foods, Canadian Mysis seems to be the best as it contains more Omega fats than some other frozen foods. Bloodworms are said to have a poor amino.acid profile so I will no longer buy those. RD has explained that frozen foods are unnecessary for fish nutrition as the quality pellets provide all your fish need and it's not good value as you are paying mostly for water.
I probably will cut down on frozen but I got a ridiculous deal on Cobalt Frozen CA Mysis last year ($10 for 2lbs!) Clearance. When I eventually run out, I'll probably just feed frozen once every two weeks or something bc I enjoy watching the fish go nuts over it.
On a sidenote, frozen clams might be a requirement for puffers if they won't eat dried foods and if you want to keep their beaks trimmed and don't have access to unlimited snails. That's a special case though.
I bought PE Mysis shrimp pellets which I got on sale and have okay ingredients of Mysis and then white.fish meal but it is super pricey. I wouldn't buy again and the NLS and Northfin are probably superior dried products.
This is just what I've gathered from reading but I think it's accurate.
Edit:
In summary,
Can't go wrong with NLS as a staple. Add in Northfin Bug pro if you like or buy their line if you prefer them as they are close to top of the line with NLS.
CA Mysis for frozen if you want but it's unnecessary.
Read some of the ingredients list on some other brands and it'll make you not want to feed it when you compare to NLs and Northfin ingredients.
