what is the most efficient and quietest sump filtration set up to run

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The gurgling is air being pulled down the primary drain. When that happens do a slight turn in the closed direction of the gate valve. There will be a sweet spot between gurgling and the emergency drain taking some water
Yeah ive done this, it took me a while to figure out the sweet spot! It's a frustrating proceses because you have to also tune it with the return flow. Over time (due to evaporation i guess) you have to tinker around with it again beacuse the water level drops. It's starting to become very tedious set up, its like i have to fine tune and play with it every 3rd day.

Definitely takes some time. Set the return flow and leave it. For myself, I set returns at 100% if primary overflow can handle it. I run ATO system so my sump level does not change. You could always run one on a freshwater system. A few good systems are the tunze ATO, the hydor ATO and the apex ATO. Apex bring my preferred with 3 levels of safety. Get a spare 20/30 gallon tank, fill with conditioned tap water and you won’t have any evaporation issues. Top off the ATO on waterchanges

This is grea

This is great advice, i had no idea about ATO systems. I have a spare cube tank (20g) that i can fit next to the sump under the stand as well.

My betta tank ATO is really simple.
No moving parts except the fish.
You just fill a bottle and invert over the tank (or sump.)
It will go empty in a week.
I call it the fish Barometer. ;)

That's poor BettaBoy. His fins were savaged by an unhappy female.

Yeah i know what your saying. I do have a valve gate on the main drain drain pipe and have it tuned so that the water sit above the main drain pipe so its not gurgling and sits just beneath the emergency drain pipe. What makes this set up noisy is the water exerting into the sump, not the drain pipes
Submerge the ends of the drain (in the sump) just a couple of inches below the running water line will do the trick

I did exactly that over the weekend and it's made a huge difference. I ended up removing the top tray in the tote tower and extend the drainpipes so that they sit below the water line. Also ended up bagging more media to sit in the sump to increase the bio load... Very happy with the outcome and how its currently running.

I didn't extend my drains. I just put a plastic cup over the end of the pipe. It sits on the top tray and it spills over into my trickle.
