what is the most efficient and quietest sump filtration set up to run

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is the quietest sump set up I've ever run for several reasons; full width overflow box (30" wide tank), dual drains set up "bean animal" style, drains enter sump below water level, sponges for mechanical media are quieter than anything that involves trickling. And also make sure your return is below surface level too. The guy who designed it had the tank in the room next to his bedroom so it had to be near silent!

I'll bet he doesn't visit the seashore much.

That's not me folks. I've had bubbles going 24/7/365 for 45 years.

I grew up on USAF bases with planes going day and night.
My first solo apartment in Calif was 100yds from the SantaFe railroad.
Before that I lived in a house with 5 other college boys.

My tanks trickle all night and I sleep like a baby. ;)

UNLESS they stop! I wake up quickly.
"Mumnfmumnfff . . . the power's off honey . . . I gotta get up."

It's my system. If I don't hear water at night, or hear my wet-floor alarm, or the fire alarm, or the dogs killing a cat, I sleep.

As long as your drains that feed your sump are submerged below the water level and your gate valve is adjusted properly your sump should run dead silent.

My new 125 is soooo quiet!
The drain is submerged, but the biggie is this:
I have the sump outside. ;)

Now I'm sitting outside with the sump and there are two pumps and 2 drains and a circulation pump going in it + 2 Aqueon 75 HOBs on the tank above.

It's been so hot today that I've got all the lids off so evaporation will cool the tank & the sump, splashing about the water on purpose, so it all sounds like Niagra Falls out here.

I'm loving it too. ;)

This is New Zealand, everyone pretty much lives at the sea shore compared to the US! :p

I envy your ability to sleep that well, I slept with a noisy 150g in my bedroom for years as a teen, don't think I could put up with it now.

I had a Herbie overflow in an internal weir and added a strainer on the primary/full siphon drain. This helped to reduce larger objects that potentially could get lodged in.

If you're using a sump pump, there are a few things you can do to make the sump pump quieter as well. Putting the air pump on a solid surface will prevent it from moving around, thus preventing unnecessary sounds from happening. You can reduce the airline tubing from the air pump to where the device is running in your aquarium. You can also check on the device where the air pump is connected because it may have gotten clogged up with debris, algae, or gunk over time.
