Freshwater clams from eBay today

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
LOL, They have an "Algae Hotline"
I was looking to see what type of algae has a higher protein content. I want my clams to be as happy as a clam. :)
I found that the freshwater algae "Chlorella" is grown as a food item and supplement for humans. One article said it may be the next soy!
I could just let what ever type of algae that I can harvest from my pond be my stock.
My water is chlorinated. If I put water in a sterile jar and seal it, no algae grows.
I think it would be a good idea to start with a pure strain. But it in not cheap.
I laughed when reading the description for the Amazon product "Algae Hotline"

  • WHICH ONE TO PICK: We have a big variety of different kits to pick from but if you call our "Algae Hotline" for our scientists, we will help with your projects or questions you may have. We have more information on our website including instructional videos at algaeresearchsupply.com.

Algae Update:
I did not call the "Algae Hotline" but I did email "Algae Research Supply" and asked them what freshwater algae would be best for raising clams.
They said "Algae Culture Chlorella Vulgaris" and sent me this link:

I looked up that strain and according to Wikipedia:
"Chlorella vulgaris is a green microalgae mainly used as a dietary supplement or protein-rich food additive in Japan."
So that answered my question about is being high in protein.

I really think I need to. It said that it has 50% protein dry weight. Do you know how expensive feed is with that much protein? I know that tilapia filter out algae and consume it also. It is like free food. Or a solar powered food generator. The algae needs light and co2 to reproduce.
Has anyone made a co2 generator that is run by adding baking soda and citric acid?
I have made one from fermenting sugar water before. When it quits produce co2, just pour out 90 of the fermented sugar water and add more sugar water. Or make beer and wine.

An algae seeded grow tank outside seems to be the way to go, one of the hardest parts about keeping clams is getting them enough food on a daily basis. I tried but could never get enough food into the tank. And when they do die, they often goes unnoticed (not the most animated of creatures) and when buried, the smell is the give away, but by then the tank is in need of serious maintenance..
I kept this tank outside to get green water, and never needed to feed fry when they were young.
