Freshwater clams from eBay today

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is a really cool thread. I like how unconventional the idea of freshwater snails are. I work with these things all the time at my job, but it never once occured to me to put them in a tank....

You work with them?

You work with them?

Well not directly, but they are present in the waterways in which I work. We view them as something if a canary in the mine to indicate a clean, oligotrophic waterway.

I would have thought you’d be the first to experiment with something like this if you work with them...

Would be interesting to see your take on how difficult it is to raise them in a home aquarium...

That's something I may do actually. I don't think I'll start them in the 550, but I'm kinda curious...

There are local species here as well. Wondering if it is worth starting a phytoplankton bioreactor to feed these? Can keep a constant source of food going.

That sounds like a fun experiment. My son would get a kick out of it, too.

I’ve often wondered exactly how much they would need, coz if memory serves correctly, i remember someone telling me a bunch of them cleaned a tank full of green water in about 3-5days?

Clam food - Green water tank:

I have in the past seen articles about growing algae, but I have never attempted it.
Most articles were concept ideas for making bio-fuel.
Would I just let what ever algae happens to grow be my algae stock, or should (if I can) purchase a culture?
I would want a culture of an algae that multiplies very fast and contains more protein, if there is such a thing.

(should this be a new thread. or remain under this clam thread?)
