The nuchal hump in FH originates from A. citrinellus, a fish that originates from harder water with higher pH values. This is why I believe FH peeps feel that one can get more bang for their buck keeping todays FH strains in higher pH values. Then again many FH keepers are nucking futs. lol

Ha ha I wouldn't deny your last statement. That said I personally feel higher PH helps more with regards to better coloring and overall health than with hump size. Given esp. what you say about A. cintrinellus a higher PH might help some, but a bigger hump is likely more dependent on genetics and diet, which I'm guessing would be your thought too.

Haha i missed the questionmark after what.

Lol that explains it, in fact I was kind surprised by what I thought was your question :)

I have no idea exactly how much pH values have to do with any of it, but keeping a fish, even a hybrid fish, that originates from higher pH values is probably going to keep that fish feeling its best, which equates to looking its best, over the long haul. Even a FH that has great nuchal hump genetics, can deflate like a flat tire when it is feeling poorly, or sick. Considering that the main trigger in nuchal hump size in cichlids derives from the gonads, this makes perfect sense.

A fish that doesn't feel its best, isn't going to look its best.
