Starting a predatory fish tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very true. Can’t forget this.

Im actually quite disturbed about how people gets hung up on gallons or liters. Id rather have lets say 800L with 120x100x70cm then 1120L with 200x80x70 as dimensions

Its not all about the gallons. Its mostly about the footprint IMHO. Lets say for an exaple 100x100x54cm is better then 150x60x60cm but still the same amount of water.
For those dimensions I will need it custom built. How much should I spend on it? I’m in Canada

I’m considering a Black Arrawana, Vampire tetra, clown knife and maybe a couple oscars. What other fish should I keep on the radar?

That was just an example. Spend what you can spend is my advice to you. esoxlucius esoxlucius recently got a nice glassfiber tank. I just aquired an 3220L plywoodtank. If you are handy and in for an diy challenge then the plywoodroute is the way to go. If not then ordering a new custom tank is the way to go.

I would personally not mix an vampire with an clownknife. Clowns are grumpy *******s and vampires do look similar in its body. That can get into an clash. But thats just me. And my opinion is that to many people gets inspired by alot of youtubers that think they knows all about fishkeeping and monsterfishes. Nowadays everyone buys an rtc, gatorgar and cichlas just because its cool. Not saying you are doing that but there has been an upswing on this forum lately.

Start scanning kijiji. If you watch it for a while, you can often find folks shutting down their systems and you can get really good deals. Especially a bigger tank like that, no one wants to move that size tank, so if you are willing to put in the work you can really score. I had a friend sell his 2’ aro in a 300g set up for $50 just to get it out of the house. I almost flipped when I found out because it was only 4-5 months before I got back into the hobby.

In regards to stocking check out some of the threads and videos here on site. Some good suggestions to look up- datnoids, chichlas(peacock bass), polypterus, stingrays, if you are looking for red tail payara- read the stickies and threads before buying. I would suggest read up on all these fish and choose which ones tickle your fancy. Most of these fish listed have different types that you can have some options in that size tank and they all have options that will easily outgrow a 300.

Also where in Canada are you at?

Do you think a Black belt or argentea would do okay with arrawana, clown knife and vampire tetra ?

No Viejas are usually quite aggro. I had an blackbelt that did attack the glas when walking by the tank.

Honestly, that's a weird mix. You can do what you want, but I think you're more likely to have long term success if you pick your centerpiece fish then fill in with appropriate fish from the same continent. If you want an arowana tank, maybe combine it with fresh water rays. Lots of people have success with that combination.

Arowana and rays is a great combo. But i would not recommend to buy an ray if the OP dont have some experience with fishkeeping and waterchemestry. Ive kept rays for 2-3 years now but been keeping fish for 20 years on and off.
