Chicxulub's Nature Preserve (carnivorous plants, orchids, etc)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow!!! You've definitely accomplished a pipe dream of mine - to buy, protect and (if need be) restore a large area of ecologically important land. Congratulations! Glad to see things are going well and very excited for future updates on this project.
Nothing has to be a pipe dream

True! It's not feasible at the moment but it's a goal worth working towards for the future.

Thank you for the kind words!

This doesn't have to be a pipe dream for you. I started making payments on this land in 2007, I paid it off in 2017. This isn't something I just did on a whim, it has taken nearly my entire adult life to have accomplished this. It's definitely a long term goal! I was 23 when I started making payments on the lot in a high interest owner finance deal by using my army enlistment bonus as a down payment. Now I'm 35 and about to start building a house on the land.

If you're willing to commit 12+ years to something like this, you can make it happen too. :)

That’s cool!

Bump!

Suppose it's time to finally update this thread lol

I've spent literally the entire time from when I started this thread until a week ago building the house mentioned earlier in the thread. We're still in the process of moving in.

But that's not the cool part. I got a toy to please the manchild that I am today! This is a Kubota B2601. I'm going to use this to do the mowing mentioned previously. This bad boy is gonna be useful and fun! My redneck ass is pleased ?

i'm planning on doing a carnivorous plant bog filter for my wifes little container pond. did you order them online? my local plant stores don't carry much other than the standard venus fly trap. i'm looking at
Sarracenia flava, some sundews and some butterwort types.

These are all native! They're growing here wild, which is a big part of the reason I chose this 8 acre plot instead of several other larger ones.

There are several nurseries that grow carnivorous plants and companion species, but idk them off the top of my head.

Will you be converting the area immediately surrounding your house to a conventional garden or are you going to keep the entire land in as natural a state as possible?

As natural as possible!

I'll keep the area around the house mowed mainly to appease the better half, but I'm not planning to introduce any turf grasses.

they're native here too but theres a law making it illegal to dig up wild plants and plant them in your yard. they are viewed as belonging to the state. so if I want to plant native plants legally here I have to buy them from the county.

They're protected here in Florida as well, though not nearly as strictly as in some other states. If one was caught poaching them, one could face prosecution, but if I wanted to dig up and sell the plants from my land, there's nothing stopping me.

I think NC and it's felony prosecution of people who dig up flytraps has the right idea personally. I'd love to see that expanded to other states for many of the threatened and charismatic species that share that type of habitat, in particular pitcher plants and orchids.
