My son and I found a new-to-us colony of parrot pitcher plants (Sarracenia psittacina) in the preserve yesterday. This was an exciting find, as these guys are tiny and hard to locate. There were about a dozen clumps of these plants in this new colony. This was an exciting find!
We've also started controlled burns in the preserve. Only two days in so far, but it's coming along well. I cut my firebreaks into smaller rectangles because my firefighting ability is limited and I want to be able to keep the intensity very low. It is exceptionally rare that these fires get hot enough that I can not walk right through them, so long as I follow the prescription correctly.
Florida's pine flatwood ecosystems are fire dependant, and the routine burning every 1-5 years is critical to remove dead growth to allow the diversity of species to thrive.
We've got a four kinds consisting of three or four unique species (depending on which authority you ask) of those on site as well, with two species starting to wake up right now.
