New RBP Mom- Need advice and help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Huge fan of the fluval canister. I have the FX6 in my 150. Also have two Eheim canisters on that tank as well. Also good product. I think I have a 307 on my 36 gallon in my office.

I've seen some reviews that say if theres a power loss, they will flood the floor? Is that true generally of canisters? Is that your experience? As I said, we are in a rural area and if it storms either tornado-ish or ice, we run a decent chance of power loss for a little while. Hours max, not days.

No. I lost power last year for 4 days. No issue. Other than I had to manually circulate the water. Canisters all were fine.

Its their actual body!!

Frozen brine shrimp, I have the pellets and blood worms and flakes. The store said they were feeding flakes and brine shrimp. They dont really go for the pellets or blood worms. The only time I've seen them eat was flakes and shrimp. And even then, I'm having to go hide and watch from a distance. ?‍♀️

Bites can heal If there not to deep. I personally would offer a chunk of fish such as Tilapia that would fill them up and may reduce aggression a bit. Frozen Brine Shrimp is not that nutritional but I get it they are eating something. Flakes ok until the RBP hit the 3inch Mark then chopped fish, Pellets.

Good to know. Thank you!

Another question..... tank heating.
One 300 or 500w or two smaller wattage on either side?
I'm reading reviews and dont trust any of these things to not fry the fish or not work at all.

I personally use 1 heater in all my aquarium's. Some members suggest 2 just in case one of the heaters fail. A 300 watt heater should be fine for a 75 gallon.

Hi, just read thru your thread. Cycling a tank takes patience. It seems to take forever. On average it takes about 6-8 weeks. Just keep doing your daily testing and water changes to keep ammonia and nitrites in check. Once your cycled, then just weekly water changes should be good. How big do the piranha get? When you said RBP I thought red bellied Pacu which get huge lol.

I personally like to do 2 heaters on anything larger than a 75. That way if one heater goes out, you have a backup. I think you said yours was a 70? A single 300 watt should be fine.

Did you add salt for the injuries?

I had kept RBP for about a year before a blowout. Youve got a lot of good advice in here from folks more experienced than I.

Ive done a fish in cycle. It’s a lot of work, but you can make it happen. On the upside, you’ll get good at water changes.

I did a 30% water change every day for about 4 weeks until cycled. I also kept a google doc to keep track of all my readings. You can also pick up some QuickStart to help build the bacteria. I can link the google doc of my fish in cycle so you can get see my readings. I kept track of time of maintenance, water change %, nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, ph.

Be prepared for violence. They may thin the herd at some point. It’s not your fault, it’s in their nature. Try to keep them well fed and you’ll run into less problems.

good luck!

Hi T Tnballgirl - welcome to mfk. Happy to have you here with us.

a couple quick things that I would like to address that I’m not sure if we’re already addressed

you said your heater was going on intermittently. That should be normal. Tank heaters typically have a thermostat in them and they shut off when they reach temp according to that heaters calibration. The best heaters are fully submersible, this way you can put them horizontally in a tank to avoid them turning on and off so much because of the internal thermostat shutting it off when the warm water rises to where the thermostat is. Another little gadget you could pick up is an inkbird controller which has a separate thermostat and will add another layer of protection to a heater being stuck in the on position. It has its own separate probe that reads the temp that you can place on the opiate side of the tank to ensure the heat is regulated better.

piranhas are typically quite shy until they are almost fully adult size/age. So they would be quite skittish and hide lots. It is good for them if you have hiding spots, not so much for you wanting to see them ?.

it’s good that you are putting together the 70 g. They will act differently once they have more room.

I’m not sure if you have them in the 70 or not yet, but you mentioned bacteria growing in it. The nitrite cycle doesn’t start unless there is an ammonia source, I can’t remember if you had been versed with this yet or not. A good start of the new tank is that once the smaller filters have bb established them you can transfer that seasoned media over and you don’t have to start over again.

great job so far. You seem to have the right attitude.

ps. The fluval canisters you are mentioning here have leaking issues that are caused from faulty o-rings. They can get gunk caught in them or even break and cause leaks. I had this happen to my 70g (now) piranha tank. The 07 series that you are talking about are a newer more improved-version that they may have fixed these issues on. If I were in your position about to choose which one to use- would pay a bit more and get the fx4 personally knowing what I know now. But if you do get the 307 it should work fine.
