Spawn of the Angels

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Congrats! Are you going to try and raise them? Are they in the 15 with the parents?

So, as tlindsey tlindsey said I was able to separate the eggs to the 15. Parents were left in the communal 90g spawn of the angel tank. I don’t block off part of the tank for the angels as they spawn because they don’t always choose the best locations. I got lucky this time.

Nice congrats! I don't use mblue for angel eggs, but if your water is hard, the mblue keeps the fungus away (soft water discourages fungus as well). So I only had to use mblue with ram eggs.

For the rams, once they hatch and some start to go free-swimming is when I transfered the little babies to a cycled bare-bottom 5g. They stay in the 5g until they outgrow it, usually 3 weeks. It all depends on how many babies you get because more babies will fill more tank space/volume. They then move to a 10g, then 20g then 40g and if they don't get rehomed, a 90g. You'll probably get an idea of when they start to outgrow a tank.

I feed my fry microworms, prepared fry food, decapsulated BBS, and recently I bought some golden pearls in 400 and 800 microns. So the best is live BBS but I never started a hatching project and had enough success for me. When they look big enough to eat frozen BBS, I feed that as well.

Good luck with your fry!

angelcrze angelcrze how do you transfer the fry? My thought was to leave them in the present tank. Do a 50% today and then once a day thereafter.

I 'steal' them with a baster lol. Parents don't like my baster at all. Or I take the eggs and hatch them artificially in a nursery. I also have let the babies stay with the parents, but I can't seem to keep them longer than a week or two with the parents (usually).

Although I have seen some great parent angels. However this is rare.

My "koi" angels came from a local hobbiest who gives away all his fry. He leaves them with the parents.

I was able to steal the spawn site this time. I will have to hit up the dollar store for a turkey baster. Eggs in my community spawn center don't typically last through the night. Plecos get em every time.

Darn plecos! I guess it all depends because I have a 90g with 7 angels and two pairs. I also have breeding BN plecos in there and two became 7 on their own without my intervention. The angel pairs have brought their fry to free-swimming more than once.

Yeah my baster is my friend. They are less adhesive one they hatch and become wigglers. When they are free swimming, I catch some stragglers with my baster when they are away from the parents and the group so the parents don't get so mad. Then I leave some for the parents to raise and let nature take its course. I've had two large swarms from one spawn, half in the nursery, half with the parents. Well that's what works best for me, but the whole spawn gives you more chance for a good spawn outcome. My fry raised in the nursery do much better for me bc feeding those fry with the parents gets difficult. Btw, I also feed the babies left with the parents with my baster. Just squirt some powdered food or whatever you have near the swarm. But lol, my angels hate my baster no matter what!

I have breeding BN in the same 90g. First batch in a 10g. Waiting on the 2nd to hatch. Need to get the new to me 29gs washed and ready so I have grow out space. Going to need to build a new rack :nilly:

Lol yes! I also have a pleco growout but these 5 babies made it in the 90g on their own despite all the angels. I have sooooooo many plecos!!!! They breed very easily and babies are easy to raise. I feel we have very similar things going on lol.
