Oscar Pair tank size

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Personally think a 150 gallon or bigger is about the right size for a pair. The 110 ish tank would be pushing it. You might be able to get away with it with large frequent water changes. But to keep maintenance reasonable and the fish happy, I would go for a bigger tnak or smaller fish. Plenty of CA/SA cichlids which would love the 110 for a pair. Any that get up to 12" max should be OK, compared to the oscars' possible 16" or so.

So the dimensions you are talking about come out to roughly 125 gallons. If that is out side dimensions then closer to 120 already. If you went a foot longer and 5" wider you'd have your 180 and have room for a pair.
Welcome btw!

Edit
Oops I see my mistake it's only 1.6 not 2'. I still say get the 180! It's only marginally bigger......lol
yea i would love to! Sadly i cant go any longer because it is going in a shed and that is as long as it can be to fit

thank you. I probably cant do a tank thats any bigger but i might just go for a single oscar until i have more space to get a bigger tank one day!

Another idea ya could always do to get some of these instead, astronotus orbicularis otherwise known as the bumblebee Oscar or dwarf Oscar. They tend to Max out at 10in compaired to a regular store bought Oscar which will cap out at around 18in. They are quite a bit more expensive to get but a pair would be able to be housed comfortably imo. Just an idea I figured I'd throw out there.

Huh sounds weird that the regular Oscars would be perfectly fine but a sub specie shouldn't be. O well there are definitely some weird laws out there in this world lol.

yea it is. basically anything that was here pre 1985 i believe it is is fine but anything post 1985 needs to get approved. apparently the approval process can run up over $1500 USD which nobody will do because we have such a small market. theres also no guarantee it will be approved so i don't know of anything that's been added really. there's so much cool stuff we cant have like freshwater shrimp, rays, pacu, koi etc

Yeah them kind of laws always suck. O well atleast it was worth a thought and there's no harm in thinking about things lol.

If you don’t mind me asking, where do you live? I don’t know if such a place that has these rules so I’m rather curious what place you’re talking about.
