Duane, our modern media is often so instantaneous, judgmental, political, and merciless, that even when the people will forgive and forget the media might not allow it.

Unfortunately confession only works in an atmosphere of mercy and tolerance. We live in a world of Hollywood TV revenge plots.

Without mentioning names, the most powerful woman in America just said that we could use poison gas against the most powerful man to “Fumigate him out”. There’s no mercy, there’s no compassion, no understanding, no forgiveness.

There is not even the willingness to entertain those things, from way too many people.

It has devolved into the Bonfire of the Vanities.

For some reason these Microsoft network links are always a PITA on my iPhone.

I have to go watch it on the Windows desktop later.

My take on the whole business is: masks work for all of the people some of the time, and they work for some of the people all of the time, but they do not work for all of the people, All of the time.

Yes that’s a covert plagiarism, but I steal from the best. ;)

Hello; For me the nature of transmission is a need to know sort of thing. First thing here is to acknowledge a sneeze or heavy cough does produce droplets and from an infected person can travel several feet and are indeed a source of infection. Most any mask can be of benefit with regard to these heavier, by comparison, drops. These droplets can be trapped inside the mask of an infected person and can be trapped outside the mask of someone else in the area. These droplets fall out of the air soon and this is where the six feet distance can also help. ( note - my unsupported guess is being within the range of an infected sneeze or cough is more risky than being around aerosol. So I am not trying to imply somehow a mask does not work.) Yes the virus can be transmitted by a sneeze or a cough is still part of the situation.

The other aspect, if it indeed does also have aerosol properties, boils down to what additional steps I need to take beyond the six feet and a basic cloth mask. When you read the article I think it describes the significance of being aerosol well. My take is it poses another level of risk beyond the effectiveness of a basic mask and staying six feet away. Distance will not matter if the virus particles can float around in the air for a long time. (Note -this is where how long the virus stays viable in the air is a good thing to know.) Also the type of mask required will be different. My unsupported guess is a cloth bandanna type mask or the like will be somewhat transparent the the very small aerosol virus particle.

Also another guess is we will need something like an N95 mask that is properly fitted at least in some situations. So far I have two such situations in mind. Being in a closed system vehicle or building. In a car with the windows rolled up and the heater or AC running for example. If I were in the same car a with someone infected for a time the virus particles could circulate over and over again as the person shed them. Same in a closed system building. (I also have an unsupported guess that this could be some less infectious than being in the cough or sneeze zone. Just a logic puzzle on my part so I will not waste your time right now.) Being outside I figure the risk is low of breathing in enough virus to matter.

Anyway this is one of the details that matter if the facts can be known. Once we know the rules we have a better chance of figuring out the best possible procedures to use.

Tomorrow we have a law coming into effect that masks must be worn in public , if you get caught without one it's a $200 fine. I'm not overly happy about it but common sense is it's not going to make things worse but might possibly make things better.
There's a protest planned apparently against it, this is what I don't get. Why gather in a crowd without a mask to protest about having to wear a mask? This behaviour is why we are in a 2nd wave and lockdown now. We pretty much had it under control, single figure or no new cases at the end of the 1st lockdown and now we are having record breaking numbers of new infections nearly everyday. The main reason for the new cases is supposedly people not isolating when infected or awaiting test results if they don't feel sick. I really wonder about people sometimes.

You would think in this day and age the world would work better against a pandemic.

I start university again on Monday, online for the rest of the year :(

People have proven time and time again that people are idiots for the most part.

Now if not having a mask in public was an arrestable offense, well, that would fix a lot of things in America....

Hello; I started teaching in public schools back in 1970. I saw serious problems right away. I kept thinking someone in authority was bound to come around and take some steps to fix the problems. It never happened. Fast forward over thirty years and all hope was gone. In fact in the last years before I stopped the education "experts" and other authorities had made things even worse. The way I see it is I can take measures to protect myself and do regardless of what others are doing.

One of the best things that will come out of the coronavirus is an awareness of our fragility as a species.

We’ve been foolishly thinking about our lives In relation to the fragility of the geosphere.

But human beings are Much more fragile, even though we are (By virtue of technology ) at the top of the food chain. Human extinction event would probably not destroy all of the cockroaches or sea snails. In fact we could all go away and most of the earth would remain as it is now.

One of my favorite phrases, “life finds a way”.
