Would These Fish Work in My 55 Gallon Show Tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wondering about Electric Blue Crawdads. I know they are a little complicated. Is their any other shrimp species that regularly reach 2-3” or wouldn’t get eaten by my fish?
Bamboo filter shrimp would be better. They are filter feeders and reach about 3". The electric blues will gladly eat any fish they can catch, and it does happen from time to time.

Do not get any bamboo shrimp or other filter feeder until the tank is very mature, like a year.

fishhead0103666 fishhead0103666 and Gourami Swami Gourami Swami , I think I may get 3 or 4 Bamboo Shrimp. I read about waiting, and I think I will wait. I just don’t quite understand it. Can you guys explain why In simple terms (since I’m a tween)?

I would get more like two in a 55. I believe fishhead is suggesting to wait a year because they are filter feeders and need lots of particles in the water column to survive. That is good safe advice to give to a beginner. But if you feed them, you could get them sooner imo. You can add some powdered food (like meant for fry) to the water column for them. Crushed up flakes/algae pellets work too. Just know what you're getting into.
For any shrimp I would wait until your tank is fully stable, which in theory shouldn't take a full year. I would probably wait another month or two after your cycle is completed to be safe.
If you want to avoid the filter feeders and not worry about adding food for them; Amano/japonica shrimp will get to a couple inches and are hardy (for shrimp) algae and detritus eaters.

That is exactly what I meant Gourami, thank you. For a beginner I wouldn’t even try shrimp especially in a community tank.

Gourami Swami Gourami Swami , I could add fry powder after a month when I have the fish, and then introduce the shrimp, and there will be enough food for them? Are Bamboo Shrimp territorial? Should I get A piece of Cholla? fishhead0103666 fishhead0103666 , why wouldn’t u get Bamboo Shrimp in a community tank?

Yes but you would need to consistently feed the shrimp. Amano shrimp are more algae/detritivores and would probably be better if you wanted shrimp to add sooner in the tank's life. Fish can pick on shrimp, but I don't think any on your list are likely to kill an amano or bamboo shrimp, they get some good size to them.
