One of my favourite fruits is the mango. I always fancied growing a mango tree from seed but failed everytime I buried the seed, they just never germinated. Then the other day my missus treated me to a big ripe mango and I thought i'm going to give it another try. But this time I ashamedly went on line looking for tips on how to finally get one to germinate. I mean, you bury the seed right, how hard can it be? And you know what, I was doing it wrong all the time! it's no wonder i've failed everytime.

The large seed in the middle of the mango is a large husky type thing, that is what I was burying. But it turns out you have to split the husk open and the proper seed is INSIDE the husk! So this is what I did, and lo and behold, there it was, a big fat juicy seed protected within. So I planted it last week and it should germinate within the next week or so.

I keep the soil moist by spraying it everyday. Apparently they make great sub tropical house plants with lush leaves. Then when they get too big you can plant them outside. It says they can survive uk temps, time will tell. So here it is, my new invisible (at the moment) mango tree. Lol.

Beside collecting aquatic plants, adding terrestrial jungle plants to the yard is becoming a thing.
Some of the guys that live on the edge of the forest bring them down, to get cash for food now that Covid isolation has reduced their income.
Mal de Madre plant. All the nubs on the edges of the leaves, are her progeny.

The flower on this one looks like an Anubius.

They are also sometimes bringing Orchids that are tied to a palm tree.

They're fantastic, very tropical and alien looking. The nearest I have to anything tropical is in my front garden, one of my favourites. It's a monkey puzzle tree which I planted about 4 years ago. Extremely hardy, this will grow into a proper monster eventually.

Fun thread! Nice to see everyone's hobbies.
Aside from my fish, I also keep reptiles and plants. My other love is skateboarding, and I enjoy many other outdoor hobbies. I build and ride bikes, surf in the summer, snowboard in the winter, and I love nature/hiking.

I had to look the one up, great tree, and endangered in its native habitat of southern Chile and Argentina.

Yeah they do come from south america. They've been around since the dinosaurs but nowadays, as you mentioned, they are sadly on the decline. Although they look very tropical they must come from areas of high elevation where it's quite cool because they thrive in the uk and the uk's about as far from tropical as you can get. They are a firm favourite of many gardeners, a mature specimen makes an eye catching centrepiece.
