Alcohol, and tobacco for that matter, both completely legal, are far more dangerous than any of the "modern" illegal drugs.

Wow, I couldn't disagree more. They are only dangerous if abused. Some people live 80+ years while using either (or both) very heavily their whole lives. Can you say the same about any illegal drugs?

(I don't consider cannabis a drug and it is not illegal in a lot of the US)

Yes, I apologise, yourself and jjohnwm jjohnwm both picked up on my error. I missed out two very important words in that last sentence of my post. It should have read, "Alcohol, and tobacco for that matter, both completely legal, are far more dangerous, IF ABUSED, than any of the "modern" illegal drugs.

Today I feel sore, like I got punched in the jaw. Also a serious hangover haunts me from the anesthetic, but the real pain is all over.

The dentist told me to avoid all alcohol for at least a week, while my jaw heals up.

Should be no problem. It's the week with no actual food.

I'll be eating pills, tea, porridge, applesauce, soup, pudding, and such non-chewables while the tortured flesh recovers.

I'm sorry that you had to use a 12 year old whisky as a pain killer!! Almost sacrilege, lol.

You don't think I actually spit it out or anything like that do you? The highland blood runs deep in my veins still. ;)

BTW, people who think that I drink a lot give me booze every year. I keep way more liquor than I will ever consume.

But I figure that, if I feel like I'm dying (or about to commit ritual suicide from the pain) I'll drink the best stuff before I go!

Hello; Not sure if this fits. My father lived to be 83 being both a drinker and a smoker. The quality of his life was affected the last fifteen or twenty years rom his excesses. I hope to not suffer the way he did as I am approaching that age. Ten years to go.
I had a close friend who smoked and another who went with an unlit cigar in his teeth most of the time. Both lost teeth from the tobacco habit, one had to have all pulled.
My mother remarried a man who smoked. I was around for the last few years of his life. He did not get cancer but some of the other long term effects. It was interesting to see him inhale a mist from a breathing machine for a few minutes and then light up a cigarette. The medications he was on affected his bones and it apparently caused his spine to press on his nerves. So he was in great pain as he took over a year to smother. I get under the definition that he "abused" tobacco. Problem is, for most folks, once addicted to alcohol or tobacco the abuse is the normal course.

I have only known a very few who smoked and did so in moderation. I may know a greater number of moderate drinkers, but I am not around many people all the time so may not know.

Don't have time to reply to everything now. The majority of South Africa lives in poverty and will sometimes blow significant amounts of their paychecks on alcohol. You can get 3x 750ml beers for $2. Obviously a lot of illicit trade going on, but the majority can't afford it at those prices so more beds open. There is a huge drinking culture in the country, something that can be attributed to "loop dop", or the habits of wine farmers to cut their workers pay with wine, particularly in the Cape where I live. There's a lasting legacy of alcoholism and foetal Alcohol syndrome.

As soon as covid cases go down it'll be opened again, like it did earlier this year. It's a big income source for the country.

In other news, there's been tonnes of lightning and storms where I'm staying on a family farm, the power has been out for 3 days till they replace a transformer. Have been using a tractor powered generator to keep the house running.

I sort of agree and disagree with this, it really depends on the person and how they react to the drug. I used to be a big weed smoker but functioned as a productive member of society. My friend just became a paranoid hermit and never left his bedroom. 20 years on and hes still the same. Another mate who had very religious parents who said marijuana is from the devil and drinking is better became a total alcoholic. Drinking cheap port as soon as he wakes up, hes been in intensive care with liver failliure but still drinks. Others in my circle got into heroin, some recovered some didnt.. Any drug legal or illegal really has the potential to mess anyone up if abused. I dont know what the answer is, its more complicated than a lot of people realise.

Back to Covid. Here in Melbourne we had 60 days in a row of zero cases. 8 hours north in sydney they have had a slowly expanding outbreak for 2 weeks, I imagine with xmas gatherings it will explode in a week or 2. Today we had 3 confirmed cases in my state linked to the sydney outbreak so the 2 month clear run is officially over. Im really hoping they can contain it before it gets out of hand.
A lot of people predicted this would happen, it seems very similar to what I saw happen in Europe over their summer. Freedom turns to complacency and then we are back to square one.
