Scary numbers. We have about 10k cases a day currently, enough to warrant the new lockdown.

The majority of South Africa lives in poverty and will sometimes blow significant amounts of their paychecks on alcohol.
Hello; There are the same sorts of situations all over my country. Such is the way it goes with alcohol addictions. I have known some personally who lost jobs and ruined their lives for the alcohol. Knew one fellow who had a good job with a construction outfit. Was in a union so was protected from losing his job until the outfit went bankrupt. Some how under the rules when new management/ownership took over the company did not have to re-hire the previous employees. This fellow was a known drunk so he wound up out of work. No one would hire him. He went on unemployment and stayed drunk until it ran out. He and some of his drinking buddies threw a bender on his last unemployment check. When he came around a couple days later his drinking buddies were long gone and he was broke without a job. There is no sense to alcoholism. It will take away everything and the addicted person winds up surviving only if they have someone who enables them. (or they somehow have lots of money).
It is hard to quit being the person who enables an addict you care about, but at some point you walk away and leave them to it.

That's an intense loss. So sorry to hear :(

Our governor has mandated lockdowns statewide, and I live right on the edge of lockdown. We have been very lucky that our area hasn't suffered 1/10 as bad as other California cities to the west, but everyone has been paranoid nonetheless. Most people wear a mask in public. Everyone who can is working from home. restaurants are delivery only or take-out service.

Everyone in our family has been well, except my Bro in law, who is a total mess, in a wheelchair with Alzheimer's coming on now at 86.

Sorry for your loss Jexnell Jexnell .

Found out yesterday that I lost two uncles, two aunts and three cousins to Covid/stupidity.
Apparently they decided to not listen to the scientists, not pay attention to restrictions and held a Thanksgiving gathering.

That is terrible news, sorry for your loss.

Alcohol, and tobacco for that matter, both completely legal, are far more dangerous than any of the "modern" illegal drugs.
I can *assure* you esox, you are wrong. I will not disclose how I know but I can assure you that you are wrong. One example that I can recall off of the top of my head is krokodil.

*I do not take drugs*

I am fully aware what krokodil is, and what it does. It is without doubt the nastiest of the "modern" drugs. And quite rightly it is highly illegal. The fact is however, that krokodil, and all the other illegal drugs, have not killed anywhere near the amount of people that tobacco and alcohol have over the years.

But yet tobacco and alcohol are legal. That is the simple point I was trying to put across, though, admittedly I didn't do it right well, as others members have also picked me up on it. They are ALL potentially dangerous, no doubt, and ALL should, in theory, be illegal. But that will never happen for many many thousands of different reasons.

Ahh yes, I had misunderstood what you were trying to say. Yes, alcohol and tobacco are some of the worst drugs there are and quite honesty I think they should be banned outright. A lot of people will be hurt by it, your wife for example, however the benefit would outweigh the negatives. I do understand that it is not a popular opinion and very many people would strongly disagree with me.
