Vieja synspilum/melanura

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I’ve finally gotten down to my main male and one female for this tank.
The female is quite small in comparison to the male. Though I’d guess the male to be 12 inches or close to with the female following up at about 7-8 inches. The female will be 1 year old in my tank this February. I may have kept too many of them in my 135g for a little too long causing her some stunting? I cannot remember how big fem

they are rather shy cichlidsI’m finding, still beauties in their own right.
They have not paired and most likely will never breed for me, but they are also not fighting so I’ll take that as a win!

Hi all,
New here. Some beauts of tanks and fish.
I just got my first Viejas Melanura. About 3" long.
Its an odd combo of a tank but so far do good.
BGK, ornate bichir, fire eel, severum, electric blue acara and EB jack dempsey, emperor pleco and some loaches.
Starting small to grow out.
So far so good20210208_082320.jpg20210208_082208.jpg20210208_082155.jpg20210208_082133.jpg20210208_082125.jpg

Question?
For veggies for V. Melanura spinach ok? Blanched or raw?
Cucs? Peas?
What all do you all use?

Hey Niki_up Niki_up keep us updated if your Syns end up producing offspring. Its been very cool watching the journey of your tank on this thread. Thanks for sharing the journey so far. A Avogt75 try not to post general questions and pictures on someone elses progression thread. Its kind of like trying to high jack the thread. I know you are new to MFK and its just a innocent mistake. I have a Vieja Melanura that looks exactly like yours. You could start a thread and then ask MFK members to share picks of their Synspiliums/Melanura.

Its amazing to see how the lights we use have such a dramatic effect on the colors of our fish. I have found that white LED with blue antic lighting built in gives great results. There is a science to it for sure, and there is a thread here somewhere that goes into great explanation of it all.

I honestly thought my last lights were a great quality and I thought my fish was just of poor stock lol
I wish I understood the science part of. I’ve tried understanding lighting and have read so many things about it but it just doesn’t sink in for me
