Vieja synspilum/melanura

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So my larger male syns did not like the cat checking him out...well the cat wasn’t even checking him out he was trying to smooze pats from me but the syns didn’t like how close the cat was to his tank lol

The syns threw on some war paint and Flared a bit at the cat and continued to swim over and check him out

I’ve gone and done it, I’ve upset his entire world today...I put in quite a large plant today. He hates it and has been trying to push it out of his way for about an hour now. 2DC9D894-A814-4D8B-9FC4-EE90A50F165A.jpegA255DBD3-0130-4904-9E2D-269C6CD8DE67.jpegD583A174-5521-4E0A-B47B-781C908B51D0.jpeg

Received two new tank occupants today. They were too large and potentially too aggressive for my friends tank so they have ended up in my setup :-)

One male and one female red rainbow. Currently sitting between 4.5-5.5 inches each ?

The remaining 3 viejas are continuing to grow. I believe I have two males and a female now without much doubt.

The big guy if I had to guess is between 10-11 inches and has been packing on height and girth

the smaller of the two are continuing to grow as well. The suspected female shows much more yellow/orange in the back half of the body that matches my large male. The second smaller one is suspected to be male and is very dark and has much more blue/purple tones with minimal orange/red.
guessing I’d say the female is 6 inches or so with the male about 7.

(My sizing are just eyeballs)

I re-homed the Congo’s and got some rainbows

I left my lid open one night and my female sword leaped out during the night.

Algae has been a battle in this tank for a few weeks now, I’ve added a small Powerbeats for additional water movement. I removed the sponges over the filter intakes as the flow was getting restricted too often.

Nitrates are still manageable in this tank. With 85-90% weekly water changes I can maintain 30 and below (just depends how much food I feed) usually about 20 nitrates is normal on water change day.

no aggression between the viejas yet, minimal chasing and all eating very well!

Beautiful plant, is that Crinum natans?
Other than try to move it, do the Vieja try to eat it? If not, Vieja being at least 50% vegetarian, I'm surprised, maybe its really bitter tasting.
I've just got a line on some here in Panama, and have always wanted to try it, when they flower, the flower is quite amazing.

I don’t decided on what plants live or die in this tank as your well aware the vieja are vegetarian hah.
The only plant I don’t know the name of in this tank is the long leaf one on the left side of the tank. I was told it’s a bulb plant. It has about 3-4 foot leaves and all the leaves are hammer texture. All plants are covered in a green hair type algae at the moment...I’ve been over feeding to ensure the plecos get some food.
Other plants in this tank are a variety of Anubis on the right hand side, crypt and limnophila sessofrilla in the middle with vals and the giant hammer leaf plant on the left.
I was at a point of wanting to re-home the plant mashers but have decided to keep them as I do love them.

edit** I just googled Crinum natans...it is not that plant. Might be closely related though. And it might be bitter as the vieja will grab it in his mouth in attempt to move its location but eventually gives up or the leave breaks after so many grabs.
