This is what happens when one is left unattended

So my bf spent the entire day away from home today...this might not mean much to some.

short version is my bf was injured in a snowboarding accident in January and has been spending all of his time at home, this has made it very difficult to bring in new fish!!

Well today while left unattended I ended up with 6 new pictus catfish, one more clown loach, 7 new shrimps, and 2 L201 plecos.

I was not planning all of these purchases but couldn’t stop myself at the same time.

my new plecos were a total mistake...I thought snowballs were peckoltia....they are not for anyone who is wondering. They are actually hypancistrus. Again not a huge deal really....however, I currently have hypans in all my tanks. To prevent inbreeding I cannot mix them, so they are all spread out in my tanks by groups. I only have two tanks they can possibly go into...not the ones I was planning that’s for sure!

I have been reading about so many different types of plecos in search for my last group to be added to my 135g that I must have had a memory lapse in which were which. I saw a very nice black one with vivid white spots that I had to have. So here I am with two...obviously could t just buy one lol

I will be going through my stock in the next few months and down sizing some fish and moving some around in my tanks.

my mom is always saying she’s glad I’m not a drug addict, alcoholic ect ect...I don’t think I will be telling her I’m a pleco addict...she will be so disappointed ???

There are tricks that make bringing new fish home easier and smoother. First, you need to have enough tanks, and hopefully not all in the same location, that spotting new additions becomes more difficult. The more tanks and fish you have, the less noticeable a few new fish, or even a new tank, become. If you yourself don't know how many you have...how will your SO spot any new ones?

Use an opaque cooler to carry fish to the LFS when you have a batch of livebearers, cichlids, or other fish you have bred and want to trade in or sell. Your spouse becomes accustomed to seeing you carry this cooler out when you say you are going to the aquarium shop; it isn't necessary to explain that it is still full of fish...different fish...when you come home.

Heavy planting, lots of decor, numerous hiding places...make it difficult to see all the fish in a tank at a single glance.

I personally don't bother with the subterfuge any more; my wife has officially dubbed me a "lost cause" when it comes to my hobbies. But these time-proven strategies work, regardless of what kind of hobby-related gear you want to smuggle into the house. Fish are some of the easiest items...once you branch out to cameras, rifles, motorcycles, drones, etc. the real fun begins.

Hahaha that is quite the thought process you have there!! Good idea with leaving with a cooler of fish and coming home with a cooler of fish ??

it’s not that I actually have to hide anything from him...I’d just prefer not to hear his comments, grunts, and groans! He stopped noticing new fish a long time ago but does notice when I’m watching my tanks a little extra when he’s around....he’s like what are you looking at? New fish? ??

Yesterday my wife asked me if I wanted to go to my favorite lfs a few minutes away from the house. I smiled and told her no because tbh didnt want to impulse buy lol. Just stick with him. Eventually, the audible signs of discontent will give way to a simple silent shake of the head, as he realizes that saying anything will be fruitless.
