Flowerhorn growout

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree. Plecos are nice but I wouldn’t get another fish if you don’t have to.

Sounds like you want an excuse to buy another fish. Do waterchanges and get an algae scraper.
? I do want another fish but not making that mistake again. I’ve had one too many overstocked tanks (only 1) and not doing that again lol. I’m smarter this time. If I wanted an excuse for another fish it would be better than blaming algae lol

Or like a whip tail catfish or something. Not getting one because 1. They’re extremely rare in my area and 2. Because I don’t have a big enough tank to add a tank mate. Just thinking of if I ever upgrade to like 125 for the FH if it would be beneficial to have something like that

You can try live plants if the flowerhorn allows it. Not sure how they are with that. Something like duckweed does a good job at feeding fish and removing nitrates.

In terms of feasibility I wouldn’t trust a whiptail, being thin and hard to keep alive as is, but a pleco or any armored cat would likely survive the flowerhorn’s wrath. Bigger tank required obviously.

Do what you want but it will require more waterchanges. I wouldn't get a pleco if I were you. If you were smarter this time you'd keep the flowerhorn solo.

Never seen duckweed for sale but would love that in my tank. I highly doubt a FH or any other solo fish could destroy duckweed with how fast that stuff spreads which is one reason I wouldn’t like duckweed, I’ve heard you have to remove it every now and then because it’ll take over then entire top of the tank

I plan on keeping the FH solo for now but wanting to someday have a tank mate. Preferably some type of armored catfish

It does spread fast. The giant duckweed is a bit more decorative. Hornwort also works for the same purpose. My vegetarian fish love it. I recently started having to take it out.

Didn’t know they were hard to keep alive. And yea obviously a bigger tank. When I’m able to I plan on having daisy in a 125 with at least one tank mate. Might it be years until that’ll happen and may not even be the same flowerhorn at the time in the future I still plan on doing something like it
