How big was he when you got him?
Inch per month is common for most of the bigger cichlids, but nowhere near what some pacu, oscars, or pbass can do, putting on a few per month at their best.
Vieja are not as aggressive growers as Oscars pacus pbass .
By my experience they grow in spurts , they'll grow grow grow and then stop and then again start growing .
I fed them heavy while growing from .5-3" .
But now when I feed heavy I see that they get bloated , so I've gone back to normal feedings and let them grow naturally as their growth rate may be

BTW, guys. I wouldn't consider P. Bass and Pacu as average sized. ?

Seems like the normal rate for a cichlid that would max around 10-12 inches. They put on about .5-1.5 inches per month depending on water change rate, feeding amount, etc.
Looking back.. I think it's much more than double ? Just forgot how small he used to be compared to the tiger barbs
